LSU QB Myles Brennan to enter transfer portal

Myles Brennan is moving on from LSU.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron confirmed with reporters that he met with Brennan on Monday and the quarterback informed him he intends to enter the transfer portal. Brennan was expected to take the reins as the Tigers’ starting quarterback after Joe Burrow moved on to the NFL after LSU’s national championship season. Instead, Brennan has been hampered by injuries the last two seasons.

“He came in to meet with me. He was teary-eyed. It was a tough decision for him. He thought he just needed to find a place that he can go play for one year and start,” Orgeron said. “He’s not going to play this year. He’s not ready. It was a tough decision. He and his family made it. I told him to hold his head high. He gave all he could to LSU. He graduated from LSU. I wish him the best.”

Brennan was the backup to Burrow in 2018 and 2019 and was the team’s starter to begin the 2020 season. In three games, Brennan threw for 1,112 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions before going down with a season-ending injury last October against Missouri.

Entering 2021, Brennan was expected to compete with Max Johnson for the starting job only to break his arm in an accident that occurred during a fishing trip. Brennan has been rehabilitating the injury throughout the season, but Orgeron said he won’t be able to return to the field this fall.

“I thought he played really good last year at the beginning of the year. He was accurate. He made the right throws. He’s got a strong arm. I thought he was going to have a great year. Unfortunately, he got hurt and then he got hurt again this year,” Orgeron said.

Brennan has been at LSU for five years. Orgeron said Brennan has aspirations of playing professional football, but wants a chance to start for a year somewhere in order to give himself a chance.

LSU already announced that Orgeron will not return as head coach next season. With uncertainty heading into 2022 and Johnson still having multiple years of eligibility remaining, Brennan is going to see if he can get on the field elsewhere.

“Things happened where he thought he had to move on and take a shot at another place. Joe Burrow did the same thing. It worked out for him. I hope the same thing works out for Myles. He wants to play pro ball, I hope he gets that shot,” Orgeron said.

LSU is 4-4 this year and will face No. 3 Alabama on the road on Saturday night.
