Lucas Torreira could finally leave Arsenal by joining a La Liga side, with his agent preparing for an ‘important’ transfer meeting today (Wednesday).

Torreira is eager to leave the Emirates so he can become a regular starter elsewhere. This is unlikely to happen under Mikel Arteta as the coach tends to use Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka or Mohamed Elneny in central midfield.

On Sunday, Torreira revealed he could link up with former Chelsea and Spurs boss Jose Mourinho at Roma.

The 26-year-old said: “Roma? Yes, there is a possibility. I spoke to Mourinho a while ago.

“I admire him as a coach. It’s an opportunity that tempts me a lot, but it’s not easy.”

A transfer to the Stadio Olimpico would make sense. Torreira knows Serie A well after spending last season on loan at Fiorentina. He has previously represented Pescara and Sampdoria in Italy, too.

However, Roma isn’t the only possibility for Torreira. According to his agent, Pablo Bentancour, the Uruguay international could end up at Valencia.

The Spanish outfit are managed by AC Milan legend Gennaro Gattuso and there is already a deal in the works with Arsenal.

Lucas Torreira agreement in place

“We have a pre-agreement with Gattuso so that Torreira plays in Valencia,” Bentancour said (via Sport Witness).

“Today, there is an important meeting for this. Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, wants to have him for pre-season.”

Arsenal don’t have much need for Torreira due to their strong midfield options. So a parting of ways makes sense.

It’s interesting that Arteta wants to have him around for pre-season, though. Perhaps the coach wishes to have one more look at Torreira before making a final decision and potentially letting him go.

The player has previously stated his desire to go back to Boca Juniors. This would allow him to be closer to his family in Uruguay.

But Boca Juniors don’t have the funds to match Arsenal’s valuation or meet Torreira’s wage demands, meaning that move is no longer viable.

Torreira will have to remain in Europe and play for either Roma or Valencia next season. But arguably this is the best solution if he wants to represent Uruguay at the World Cup in November and December.

Torreira has one more year left to run on his Gunners contract. This means Arteta’s side should pick up a small fee from Torreira’s next club, if an exit officially goes through.

Meanwhile, Roy Keane has taken a swipe at Arsenal for blowing their Champions League hopes last season and allowing Tottenham in the back door.
