Landmark lady Lucinda Russell has sights set on more big-time success on the trail of the next thousand winners.

The brilliant Scottish handler has smashed through the four-figure barrier and took her tally to 1,002 with Evaluation’s Wednesday success at Ayr. Russell has cherished every triumph and the hunger remains as the two-time Grand National and Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer seeks more top-level prizes.

On the pride of passing the 1,000 mark, she said: “Oh yes, definitely. But it is not just about numbers. It’s actually about having good winners, too. That’s the thing about increasing the quality and going for the better races because that is important. Even so, you do celebrate them all because every winner is important.

“It’s hard at this time of the year to take a step back and pause to think about anything, but I suppose I sort of knew it would happen this season. You forget about it, then people remind you and I am very, very proud of it.

“I’ve obviously been training a long time, so you are going to make up those numbers and now I just want to do more. People have been very supportive and kind.”

Russell’s partner and training sidekick Peter Scudamore added: “I think it’s a reward of the hard work Luce has put in. We’ve been lucky enough to break records before and you try to put them behind you, mentally. But, in some ways, this is as proud a thing as I’ve been involved in because I realise how difficult that it is.”
