Playing the game you love for a living, not to mention your working day ending at 1pm. It doesn’t get any better than being a young professional footballer, right?

If you’re Kevin O’Connor it does. The Preston North End defender, 22, doesn’t only get paid rather well for playing the beautiful game, he now doesn’t need to get paid for playing the beautiful game!

The Irishman has secured the biggest victory of his life – he’s now a lottery millionaire.

After spending some family time back home last week, O’Connor was bought a Christmas present he’ll never forget.

His uncle Peader Murphy wrapped up a National Lottery ticket as a present – and it turned out to be some gift.

Back in Lancashire at the time of the draw, North End’s left-back forgot all about it until he got a call from his mother Brenda demanding he check his numbers after it was announced the winning ticket was bought locally.

“I don’t think the win has sunk in yet,” he said. “It’s been an incredible couple of day.

“I have no immediate plans for the money but it will take a few days before we make any decisions.

“The important part of today was having my family with me, so they will be at the forefront of any plans.”

He found out on Sunday – but of course Preston had a big game the next day. While most of us would struggle to keep focus and not pull out the bubbly, O’Connor remained professional.

“We had a game with Middlesbrough on Monday night so I completely put it to the back of my head until after the final whistle,” he said.

“The important part of today was having my family with me so they will be at the forefront of any plans.

“My main focus at the moment is to help Preston climb the Championship and hopefully challenge for a Premier League spot over the next couple of months.”
