Luka Doncic sinks wild buzzer-beater to lift Mavericks past Celtics

Luka Doncic nearly tumbled into the fans sitting courtside at the American Airlines Arena on Saturday night, but the Dallas Mavericks star still got his game-winner to fall.

Doncic, right as time expired, drilled a fade-away 3-pointer over Josh Richardson to lift the Mavericks past the Boston Celtics 107-104.

“For one second I just stood there, I didn’t realize I made it,” Doncic said. “But it was amazing, you know? … I got to say I think I like the left foot on the 45 degrees. I think I like that spot.”

The Celtics had fought all the way back from a 17-point halftime hole and took the lead with just 2:12 left after a Marcus Smart 3-pointer. A Kristaps Porzingis dunk, however, tied things back up and set up the final sequence for Doncic — who delivered perfectly.

“I think everyone knew the ball was going to 77, and he delivered,” first-year coach Jason Kidd said. “He loves that moment, his teammates know that, and I would say the opposing team knew the ball was going to Luka and there was nothing they could do.”

Donic’s bucket brought him to 33 points on the night, matching a season high. He finished with nine points and five assists while shooting 12-of-21 from the field and 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Porzingis added 21 for the Mavericks, and both Jalen Brunson and Reggie Bullock finished with 13 off the bench.

The Mavericks have now won three of their last four, including a one-point win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday.

Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 32 points and 11 rebounds in the loss, which marked the fourth in their last six games. Dennis Schroder added 20 points, and Robert Williams finished with 16. Jaylen Brown, the team's leading scorer, missed the game with a hamstring injury.

"You could see the second half was night and day," Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. "We know that if we don’t dig ourselves a hole, it’s a different game. But to their credit, they got back in it and we had our chances."
