Luton boss Nathan Jones hot favourite for vacant Southampton manager role

Southampton showed Hasenhuttl the door in the wake of their awful 4-1 Premier League home defeat by Newcastle, which left them in the bottom three in the Premier League.

The highly-rated Jones already looks nailed on for the St Mary's role with bookies offering stingy odds of 2/9.

Eighth-placed Luton are currently exceeding expectations in the Championship, and are just two points off the play-off places with a game in hand.

The 49-year-old Welshman had a very short stint as manager of Stoke in 2019, but was handed his marching orders after winning just six of his 38 games in charge, which won't fill Saints fans with much confidence.

Jones' nearest challenger is...yes you've guessed it, Sean Dyche at 7/1, with two blokes most Premier League fans will never have heard of, Kjetil Knutsen (11/1) and Marcelo Gallardo (14/1), next on the list.

Norwegian Knutsen has transformed Bodo/Glimt into a dominant force in Norwegian football, leading them to consecutive league titles, and a run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho will still be having nightmares about the six goals Bodo/Glimt put past his Roma side in October 2021.

Gallardo will be leaving River Plate when his contract expires in early December. He is the most successful manager in the Argentinian giants' history having won 14 trophies with the club.

He has been linked with Manchester United, Barcelona and PSG, so why he'd want to go to Southampton is anyone's guess.

Former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino is at 16/1, but again he has loftier ambitions.

Former RB Leipzig head coach Domenico Tedesco is at 22/1, with Lille's Paulo Fonseca (25/1) and former Olympiacos boss Pedro Martins around the same price.

More familiar names Steven Gerrard (25/1), Vincent Kompany (25/1), Nuno Espirito Santo (25/1), Rafa Benitez (33/1), Scott Parker (33/1) and Chris Wilder (33/1) are next in line.

Just in case you were worried that Big Sam Allardyce wouldn't be called in for a relegation scrap, he's lurking rather ominously at a lowly 27/1 with some bookies.
