Maghull’s Mark Worthington nets a 170lb catfish in Spain
While a record fish may be only a dream to the average angling enthusiast, there will be many who, like me, will just be content with what we call in the game, our very own ‘personal best’.
After noting some superb roach had been caught across sections of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal recently, the topic then raised a common question that many will have often heard asked, on whether it would be a huge net of carp or simply a nice net of prime roach that we would personally prefer to catch.
Roach was the favourable answer and I’ll have to agree with that one.

Whether it is on a canal, a lake or even on a river, there’s simply little that can be more pleasing than putting a lovely net of prime red fins together anywhere.
However, thought must go with those anglers who simply live for catching their ‘dream’ fish and one man who is always looking towards catching and improving on breaking his own personal best is Maghull’s Mark Worthington.
Last week the self-employed builder, along with his business and fishing partner Keith Kearns, once again made their annual pilgrimage over to Spain’s famous River Ebro where they again joined forces with the excellent guides hosting them from Ebro Fishing Dreams.
As a family-run business, this is one that has always offered Mark and Keith nothing but success and an opportunity to make their own dreams come true and this year and although not actually breaking their own personal bests, they put together 12 huge catfish that were over 100lb, with Mark taking the biggest of the week weighing in at an incredible 170lb.
It was a fantastic week, and I hold nothing but admiration after this information was shared with me.
I even have to admit as much as I do like my roach fishing, the stage is already set for me to be looking into making my own preparations for my debut in Spain to be actually enacted.
On the bank locally, finding the Alliance opting to stay at home on Chapel Pool on Sunday, club secretary Steve Cain found his way back to winning ways with a lovely win on this one.
Choosing the tactic of using a long pole at 14 metres, Cain’s corn approach saw carp and Ide attracted to it which saw him put together a weight of 67.12.0 for the day’s top honours.
Dave Pellow, with a catch of 35.3.0, took second place over his in-form brother Colin who took third place with a close 33.13.0.
Liverpool & District AA will be holding the Fred Moss Memorial Match on Saturday, November 23.
Draw time is 9am at the MCA Club at Green Lane Maghull.
Fishing is from 10.30am to 3.30pm there will be a grand raffle with some fantastic prizes available with refreshments after the match back at the headquarters.
