Leicester City’s major injury blow has been confirmed with Abdul Fatawu ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL tear.

The winger revealed on Wednesday evening he had undergone surgery after suffering the injury while on Ghana duty. Manager Steve Cooper confirmed the “difficult news” on Thursday morning that he had sustained a serious knee problem and won’t play again this term.

“It’s not good,” Cooper said at his press conference. “It’s a serious injury. It’s an ACL injury that rules him out for the rest of the season.

“A young player with a serious injury, it’s a blow for him and a blow for us as well. We’ve very much now got to support him in every way in making his rehab as smooth as possible so that he comes back stronger. It’s difficult news.

“He’s a big talent and a young player who is exciting. There’s so much to be excited about with him. He was starting to show real good signs of the potential he has.

“But it’s only a pause. As difficult as this is, we’ll make sure he comes back stronger, which with the mentality he has, that will happen.”

There is better news elsewhere on the injury front. Patson Daka will be fit to play his first game of the season against Chelsea, while Jamie Vardy is also pushing to be available after a back injury kept him out of the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid is another who could come back into contention. He's been out since sustaining a cut on his Achilles in the 5-2 loss to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Plus, Jordan Ayew could also be available. Ghana’s medical team reported that he had suffered a “significant” knee issue but Cooper says it’s not too bad.

Cooper added: “Patson is back training. Jamie is back training but that’s slightly modified, so we’ll see how he is. Jordan is injured but it’s not as serious as it was reported. He could be available for the weekend.

“(De Cordova-Reid) has been back on the training pitch. He had a cut from the United cup game that was in an awkward position above the Achilles that is sometimes healing but sometimes opening up, so it’s been stop-start for him. It’s been a little frustrating. He trained with us yesterday and the hope is that he reports today and the cut hasn’t opened up again.”
