Manchester City could be "thrown out of more than just the Premier League" with its hearing over the 115 charges taking place this week. Liverpool and the rest of the top-flight clubs will be awaiting the verdict with interest.

According to The Telegraph, the rest of the Premier League sides do not believe that a points deduction would be a severe enough punishment if Manchester City is found guilty of the charges. The Etihad side has always maintained its innocence.

Expulsion from the Premier League has not been ruled out in the worst-case scenario for Manchester City. But beyond that, it is suggested that it could lead to the current champion to be prevented from being involved in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League as well. Each competition's rules and regulations are slightly different, with various powers to exclude teams.

The report states that it is possible that Manchester City could only be allowed in the Champions League and Club World Cup next season, for instance. But that would lead to bizarre breaks between fixtures in those matches.

Given the case is unprecedented, it is impossible to know what the outcome will be. In addition to the complexity of the case, there are so many charges to go through that the potential punishment could be hugely varied depending on how many of them stick and how many accusations are disproven.

Liverpool.com says: Even when the case comes to an end, there could be an appeals process. It doesn't feel much like this will be an easy solution with an obvious outcome at the conclusion of the hearing.

And even if Manchester City is found guilty, the full impact for it and everyone else will not become clear straight away. Liverpool, in theory, could be awarded titles in retrospect but that would seem pointless. There is no simple solution, which is exactly why the process has been so long and drawn out.
