Man City are reportedly planning to ‘formalise their interest’ in Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips ‘later this month’.

The 26-year-old has spent all of his career at Leeds United. He has played 234 times for his boyhood club.

His performances stepped up a level during Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure in charge. This has led to him becoming a regular for England.

Players, fans and the Nations League all caught in the grim Qatar World Cup fall-out

Phillips was a standout performer for The Three Lions at last summer’s European Championships.

The midfielder missed 14 league games through injury in 2021/22 as Leeds battled for survival in the Premier League.

Club legend Fernandinho is leaving Man City this summer upon the expiry of his contract.

The Telegraph are reporting that City have ‘identified the Leeds United midfielder as an ideal long-term replacement for Fernandinho’.

The Premier League champions intend to ‘formalise their interest’ in Phillips at the end of the international break.

‘Leeds have not given up hope of persuading Phillips to sign a new contract’ but Man City are ‘ready to test their resolve’ this summer. His current deal expires in 2024.

City have already signed Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez but Pep Guardiola is said to ‘want a quality midfielder’.

Elsewhere, it is understood that Man City will not make a move for Bukayo Saka, contrary to reports they are looking to take advantage of his uncertain future at Arsenal.

It was reported on Tuesday that the Premier League champions have ‘stepped up their interest’ in Saka, with his contract expiring in two years.

His current deal includes an option to extend his contract by another year, which would keep him with the club until 2024.

The Gunners are believed to be prioritising a contract extension for the 20-year-old after he showed his importance to Mikel Arteta’s squad in 2021/22.

Saka was Arsenal’s top scorer across all competitions this season, netting 12 times, including 11 in the Premier League as his side finished fifth.

The Daily Mail claimed that the north Londoners’ failure to qualify for the Champions League has ‘complicated’ talks over a new deal, with Man City and Liverpool said to be eyeing up a move.

However, the Manchester Evening News believe the England winger is not in City’s plans ‘for this or subsequent transfer windows’.
