Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed Phil Foden to improve even further following yet another impressive display away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

The England international scored twice in a 4-1 win at the Amex Stadium before setting up Riyad Mahrez in the final minute of the game, taking his tally up to three goals in four Premier League starts.

Emerging as a palpable goal threat after a summer in which City failed to sign Harry Kane, Guardiola was effusive in his praise of the 21-year-old.

“There are players that play in one position and there are players who play football, when you play football it means you can play any position, you understand the game,” he said when asked about Foden’s ability to play across the frontline.

“In the final third he can play up front, has the quality to move and be aggressive one on one and arrive in the box. He can play as a false nine, a winger, wide right or wide left.

“He is a guy who is a midfield player with a big sense of the goal. He is still young and still has a margin to improve.”
