Man City have moved quickly to enter negotiations with Anderlecht over a deal for Sergio Gomez after being priced out of a deal for Marc Cucurella, according to reports.

After selling Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal this summer, the Citizens are now looking to find another player who can play left-back for them next season.

Joao Cancelo also played there a number of times last campaign and it had seemed likely that Man City would tie up a deal for Brighton defender Cucurella.

Cucurella, De Jong among five transfers we still want to see happen this summer…

Man City were willing to pay £40m for the left-back but Brighton wouldn’t budge on their £50m valuation and now Chelsea are closing in on the signing.

And Pep Guardiola has now turned his attention elsewhere with The Athletic journalist David Ornstein claiming that Man City are now ‘in negotiations to sign’ Gomez from Anderlecht.

The Spain under-21 international joined the Belgian side in 2021 from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund after he impressed in a successful loan spell at Huesca.

And he contributed six goals and 11 assists from left-back in his first season at the club and he’s already impressed Guardiola enough for his compatriot to make a move for him.

Ornstein adds that Gomez is ‘viewed as a high-potential development talent and their move for the Spaniard is irrespective of any other targets for the position at first team level’.

That means that City ‘remain in the market for a senior recruit and are considering various options’ with the report adding that Gomez is ‘also capable of operating in an advanced midfield role’.

Following Fernandinho’s exit this summer on a free transfer, City need a new captain with numerous potential candidates for the role.

And Guardiola has revealed that expects Kevin de Bruyne to be elected new captain for the upcoming season after the Belgian was part of a ‘leadership group’ last term, alongside Fernandinho, Ruben Dias, Kyle Walker and Ilkay Gundogan.

“They are going to take the decision next week,” Guardiola said at the end of last week. “I’m pretty sure Kevin will be (chosen).

“As the oldest player here, (with) the responsibility he takes on the pitch, and in many cases off the pitch, he will (have) a key role within the team, I’m pretty sure.

“But I don’t pick. They pick. It’s not a question of favourites – what the team decide is perfect. What the staff decide I’m happy (with).”
