Chelsea are facing double trouble in their quest to retain an attacker Graham Potter has already labelled “amazing”, with Man City one of two clubs plotting an eye-catching raid, per reports.

The attacking areas remain something of an enigma at Chelsea. Romelu Lukaku was re-signed fore a club-record £97.5m in 2021. The Belgian failed to match the form he showed at Inter Milan, with fellow flop Timo Werner returning to the starting eleven as last season wore on.

Both players were axed over the summer, with Lukaku re-joining Inter on loan and Werner sold back to RB Leipzig.

Kai Havertz had deputised up front under former boss Thomas Tuchel on occasion. However, the German clearly did not view his fellow countryman as the long-term option.

Indeed, Tuchel was likely behind Chelsea signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the latter stages of the last window. Tuchel and Aubameyang have a healthy relationship dating back to their Dortmund days.

However, Tuchel was unceremoniously dumped from his position less than a week later. New boss Graham Potter has chopped and changed up front, with Havertz, Aubameyang and Armando Broja all seeing time at centre-forward.

Havertz is yet to live up to his £72m billing. He has notched vital goals, most notably in the 2021 Champions League final. However, a return of 26 goals and 14 assists in 107 matches is not what Chelsea broke the bank for.

Regardless, still only 23, he may yet prove to be a worthy buy in the long run. Indeed, he’s already shown exactly what he’s capable of when scoring with a fantastic curling strike against RB Salzburg on Tuesday.

Graham Potter labelled the goal “amazing” and joked players like Havertz make his job easy with such moments of class.

However, according to multiple reports, Havertz is a wanted man.

Man City, Bayern want Chelsea forward Havertz

Firstly, Bild journalist, Christian Falk, tweeted it’s ‘true’ Bayern Munich asked about a Havertz transfer last window.

Football London go on to speculate they may yet revisit the move given they didn’t sign a direct replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Secondly, CaughtOffside (citing journalist Simon Phillips), claim Man City are interested in bringing Havertz to the Etihad.

Falk stressed Chelsea’s response to Bayern’s interest was emphatic. “No!” was reportedly the answer.

Furthermore, the CaughtOffside report suggests it’s ‘unlikely’ Chelsea would be anything other that dead against strengthening a direct Premier League rival such as Man City.

Additionally, in the event Havertz were to be sold, Todd Boehly and co. would need to re-enter the market.

Havertz can play in a variety of roles in the final third and his versatility often proves key during a long and congested season.

The Blues are known to be leading the race to sign RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku. Indeed, a secret medical reportedly took place in Frankfurt way back in August ahead of a move next summer worth around £52m.

However, there is no indication that Nkunku is being lined up to replace Havertz. Like the German, Nkunku is a jack-of-all-trades and can slot in almost anywhere across a frontline.

Chelsea also want to sign centre-half Josko Gvardiol who could cost around £77m. With such hefty outlays potentially on the horizon, it makes little sense for Chelsea to sell Havertz and give themselves even more work to do on the arrivals front.
