Man City prepare €100m package to sign best player in La Liga after eclipsing Arsenal, Liverpool offers
Man City have become the strong favourites to sign the player who was named as the best in La Liga last month after a report revealed how much they are willing to spend on him.
Over recent years, Man City have reaffirmed their status as big spenders in the transfer market. Their success on the pitch has enabled them to attract plenty of top talent to the Etihad Stadium. But their squad has been evolving over the past couple of years.
Last summer, they sold first-team stars like Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko. This year, they are bracing themselves for the potential departures of players such as Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan.
The latter will be out of contract at the end of the season, so would require replacing. And just as he has been linked with Barcelona, perhaps the answer could come from elsewhere in La Liga.
According to Marca, Man City are the latest admirers of Celta Vigo talent, Gabri Veiga. His four goals and one assist in February earned him La Liga’s player of the month award, before he proceeded to score once in March.
During this time, he has been linked with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid. There have been some conflicting claims as to which transfer is the most likely.
Whatever happens, it seems like a tough ask for Celta to be able to keep hold of the 20-year-old. Besides, they will be powerless if anyone activates Veiga’s €40million (£35m) release clause.
And according to Marca, that is exactly what Man City are ready to do. Furthermore, they will offer the player a five-year contract to Veiga whereby he would earn a total of €60m.
In other words, Veiga could earn a salary of around £200,000 per week with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Those figures dwarf anything on offer from Arsenal or Liverpool, the report clarifies. Now, it is up to Real Madrid to try and match them, since they have been the main candidates to keep Veiga in Spain.
As things stand, though, Man City seem to be firmly in the lead to take the Spain under-21 international.
Gabri Veiga could help Man City move into new era
Mainly a central midfielder who can also push up into a number 10 role, Veiga could become a long-term successor to Gundogan if he develops appropriately at City.
He could also help fill any void that Silva would leave if he was to call time on his spell in Manchester.
Veiga would have to deal with the step up to a club of Champions League calibre. But he has been highlighting his potential with his displays in early 2023. Thus, he could be ready to reach the next level quickly.
Soon, his window of opportunity could open to enable him to join Man City and further increase his prominence.
