Man City star performs stunning U-turn over exit request after naming his favourite Citizens player
Joao Cancelo could yet return to Manchester City after hinting his time at the Etihad is not over and speaking about some of his favourite team-mates from his spell under Pep Guardiola.
Bayern Munich caused a big shock when reaching an agreement with City to sign Cancelo on loan on January 30. The attacking full-back had become one of City’s best players in recent years and was named in the Premier League’s PFA Team of the Year in the last two seasons.
However, Cancelo had asked to leave City after falling out with Guardiola due to a lack of game time. The reigning league champions obliged and Cancelo’s move to Bayern was confirmed on transfer deadline day.
Bayern have the option to sign the Portugal international permanently for €70million (£61.5m) in the summer. Some reporters in Germany have suggested the Bundesliga giants will try to reduce this price before capturing Cancelo on a permanent basis.
Cancelo has made six appearances for Bayern so far. He has yet to score a goal, though he has chipped in with two assists for his team-mates.
When the 28-year-old left City, it did not seem as though he would return while Guardiola is manager.
But Cancelo has now suggested his time with City is not over. During a recent media appearance, the player named Bernardo Silva his favourite former team-mate before making a big hint about his City future.
“Will I still celebrate an English title with City? I hope so,” Cancelo said (via Manchester Evening News).
Joao Cancelo reveals ‘best friend’ from Man City
“I created a second family there. Bernardo has become one of my best friends, he is the person I miss the most there.
“He was my psychologist. When something didn’t go so well, he was the one to talk to.
“Ruben [Dias] too, but my relationship with Bernardo is actually very good, even on the field, we had a great connection when we played on the same side. He is a person that I will take with me for the rest of my life.
“Of course, in England I’m rooting for them and I hope they win so that at the end of the season I can be celebrating a title in England and another in Germany. City’s group is spectacular, it’s the best I’ve ever worked in, both as a group and personally.
“I created great friendships. [Riyad] Mahrez is a great friend of mine, not a day goes by that he doesn’t call me.
“[Jack] Grealish is a spectacular person. Nathan [Ake] is one of the best people I’ve met in football.
“A spectacular group, I would go to training with great enthusiasm. Everything in life has an end.
“But at the end of the season I might even return, you never know.”
It would be a surprise if Cancelo did return to City after falling out with Guardiola. But his latest comments seem to suggest he is considering this possibility.
Perhaps Cancelo will see how the next few months with Bayern go before completely shutting the door on City. If he enjoys his time in Germany, then he will likely ask Bayern to activate their purchase option. But if he prefers City, then a return to Manchester could be on the cards.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are rushing contract talks with one of their players after finding out City would like to snare him.
