Man City superstar now ‘open’ to summer switch as European rivals prepare to meet €70m price tag
Bayern Munich are now warming to the idea of signing Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo permanently, according to reports.
The Portugal international signed for the Bundesliga giants on a loan deal late in the January window, much to the surprise of City supporters.
After initially struggling for minutes in Germany, Cancelo has grown into his role at Bayern, with the player now thought to be open to remaining at the Allianz Arena.
This is according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, who claims the defender is warming to the idea of staying at Bayern, with a final decision to be made in the coming months.
It is believed that Pep Guardiola is willing to let Cancelo leave this summer despite putting in some memorable performances for City, playing a key role as the English club lifted two Premier League titles and a League Cup.
Indeed, Bayern have the option to buy the 28-year-old permanently for €70m (approx. £61.6m) and while this is a sizeable fee, at his best, Cancelo is easily worth that amount.
Cancelo set to face City in Champions League
As previously reported by TEAMtalk, Bayern have seemed reluctant to sign Cancelo permanently, after he failed to have a significant impact in his early performances for the team.
Indeed, manager Julian Nagelsmann seemed unsure where to play the Portugal international, with him featuring as a right-back, left-back and right-winger.
However, in a recent game against Augsburg, everything seemed to click for the versatile player.
Operating from the right wing, Cancelo put in his best performance in a Bayern shirt to date, scoring a fine goal and making one assist in a 5-3 victory.
Overall, in nine appearances for the Bundesliga giants, the Portugal international has scored one goal and made four assists, giving him an impressive average of 0.55 goal contributions per game.
In a few weeks, Bayern are set for a huge match against Man City in the Champions League quarter-finals, where, interestingly, Cancelo will actually be allowed to play, so he may ironically have a hand in knocking his parent club out of the competition.
If he does want to remain in Nagelsmann’s starting XI, that is exactly the kind of game Cancelo needs to shine in to cement his spot.
But, if Bayern opt against paying his £61.6m release clause, it is believed that Barcelona are ready to move in and snap up a cut-price deal for the star.
