Man City transfer wishlist: Pep Guardiola to meet board and demand these players for Champions League glory

Pep Guardiola will parade an unprecedented domestic treble through the streets of Manchester on Monday – and then tell his bosses how to secure the one that got away.

The Catalan will hold talks with Manchester City chiefs this week to finalise the list of targets he believes can finally secure Champions League glory.

Guardiola will stay behind in England for another week before spending the majority of the summer in Barcelona.

He has scheduled a meeting with chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain, where he will tell them he wants two centre backs, a right back, a holding midfielder and a forward to further strengthen a squad that completed a clean sweep of domestic trophies with victory against Watford in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Guardiola and select members of City’s hierarchy had been made aware in recent days of Vincent Kompany’s plans to leave the club and become player-manager at Anderlecht. But the Belgium international’s announcement came as a shock to his team-mates in the immediate aftermath of the 6-0 Wembley win.

With Nicolas Otamendi also expected to leave after growing frustrated with his lack of first team action, Guardiola is set to lose a wealth of experience at the back.

And after admitting he goes ‘to church to pray’ when defending set pieces, it is notable he will be robbed of his two most authoritative figures in the air.

Guardiola is a huge admirer of Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt – but both City and Manchester United are convinced the Holland centre back is set to sign for Barcelona.

Harry Maguire has been linked, which could pit the Manchester rivals against each other this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also interested in Leicester’s England international.

And they could go head-to-head again in a battle for Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Holding midfield has long-been Guardiola’s priority position to fill – particularly after Fernandinho’s injury disrupted campaign.

Atletico Madrid’s Rodri is a leading target in that position and with a £60m buyout clause should be a relatively straight-forward deal to pull off.

Another forward may be required to replace Leroy Sane after Guardiola admitted the Germany winger still refuses to sign a new contract despite 18 months of negotiations.

With City facing a potential Champions League ban over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play, next season could be Guardiola’s final chance to deliver European football’s biggest prize to the Etihad.

City deny any wrongdoing – but a proposed expulsion would be in the final year of Guardiola’s contract, 2020-21.

“I know we will be judged at the end on whether we win the Champions League,” he said. “I know unless we do that it will not be enough.

“This comes with me. I know that. I arrive in Barcelona, we were lucky we won it two times in four years and the people expect I am something special that we have to win the Champions League and it’s still true.

“In this club, the points record and the domestic competitions is incredible, but the Champions League we don’t win quite often compared to the other ones because the teams are so good, the competition is so demanding, but we want to win it.”
