Man City 5-0 Arsenal LIVE! Gunners thrashed - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Manchester City vs Arsenal - LIVE!

The pressure continues to mount on Mikel Arteta after another horrible day for Arsenal at the Etihad.

The Gunners now sit at the bottom of the early 2021/22 Premier League table after losing three successive matches to open a season for the first time since 1954.

Despite a promising start, Arsenal trailed 2-0 after just 12 minutes on Saturday thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres that involved some truly abysmal defending.

Things went from bad to worse 10 minutes before the break when Granit Xhaka was rightly sent off for a two-footed tackle on Joao Cancelo.

Jack Grealish teed up Gabriel Jesus for a third City goal shortly before half-time and proceedings just inevitably got even uglier for 10-man Arsenal after the interval.

Arteta’s demoralised and overmatched side were left chasing shadows in what resembled an attack vs defence training match as Rodri and Torres added further goals, with only some solid saves from Bernd Leno preventing the punishment from being even worse.

Guardiola reaction

14:56 , George Flood

“We found the goals and after the sending off from Xhaka... it was more difficult for the opponent and easier for us,” he told BT Sport.

Guardiola added: “We know in the past that Mikel (Arteta) plays almost man to man, but after that we were able to drop them and after that our position was good and after 2-0, when they play with 10 men, it was another game.

“So we get another goal, we respect the opponent and what they have to do, and we get the victory.”

Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal

Another horrific day for the Gunners.

Pressure continues to mount on Mikel Arteta.

14:22 , George Flood

92 mins: Almost 6-0 as Gundogan does well to float in a perfect pass for the unmarked Cancelo, who is thwarted by Leno.

14:22 , George Flood

89 mins: Torres is a whisker away from completing his hat-trick before a low save from Leno as we enter three minutes of added time at the end of his thoroughly one-sided contest.

Gundogan is named man of the match.

GOAL! Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal | Ferran Torres 85'

14:15 , George Flood

85 mins: It’s five as Torres arrives to head Mahrez’s pinpoint cross in off the post for his second goal of the afternoon.

Arsenal are out on their feet. They have spent the whole day chasing shadows.

14:11 , George Flood

80 mins: Lacazette with a thankless task up front for Arsenal in these final minutes, trying desperately to chase down and get anywhere near the ball.

Unsurprisingly, many of the away fans have already streamed out of the Etihad. Who can blame them?

14:10 , George Flood

77 mins: Leno denies Sterling again after Laporte had also tried to flick home a fifth.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles - linked with Everton today - replaced Odegaard a few minutes ago.

14:04 , George Flood

71 mins: A rather subdued atmosphere has taken hold at the Etihad as City coast about the pitch in nonchalant fashion, with Arsenal’s 10 men getting nowhere near and praying that the champions are content with 4-0.

Just the three touches for City ‘keeper Ederson in this half, all passes...

13:59 , George Flood

66 mins: A stat just flashed up saying that Man City have had 97% - yes, 97% - possession over the last few minutes.

When was the last time you saw that?!

Rodri stands on Tierney’s foot and receives a yellow card for his troubles.

Leno at full stretch to tip over Sterling’s header at the back post before the England man then bends a shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

13:53 , George Flood

62 mins: Mahrez for Jesus is Guardiola’s third change of the afternoon.

Laporte annoyed with himself as he nods well wide.

13:50 , George Flood

57 mins: Sterling replaces Bernardo as Aubameyang makes way for Lacazette.

Riyad Mahrez’s introduction is also imminent for City, who are completely and utterly dominating the ball.

Like a training match.

13:46 , George Flood

55 mins: Chances galore for City’s fifth, with Bernardo’s effort taking a deflection off Chambers before just evading Torres.

Zinchenko then sees a decent attempt blocked behind.

Raheem Sterling preparing to enter the fray for City. Arsenal are going to send on Alexandre Lacazette.

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

13:46 , George Flood

Fair play to the Arsenal away fans, who are still singing their hearts out as the fourth goal goes in.

Plenty of gallows humour from them.

GOAL! Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal | Rodri 53'

13:44 , George Flood

53 mins: That is a beauty from Rodri, who is picked out by Torres and then bends a brilliant low shot beyond Elneny and into the bottom corner from outside the box with Leno unsighted.

More misery piled on Arsenal’s 10 men. City are enjoying themselves... an absolute stroll in the park.

And it’ll surely get even more emphatic.

13:41 , George Flood

50 mins: Superb feet from Grealish inside the box to find Bernardo, whose shot is parried by Leno.

Rodri then thunders in a second effort that is inadvertently blocked by team-mate Torres.

13:39 , George Flood

48 mins: That’s a gorgeous ball whipped in first time around Tierney from Cancelo, but it’s just too powerful for Bernardo to reach inside that Arsenal six-yard box.

13:37 , George Flood

46 mins: City immediately back onto the front foot as Gundogan sweeps the ball out to Jesus, whose cross with the outside of his boot just evades Torres in the middle.

This is going to be 45 minutes of pure attack vs defence.

Damage limitation for Arsenal in every way.

13:35 , George Flood

A change apiece at the interval.

Mohamed Elneny replaces Bukayo Saka for Arsenal and City replace Kyle Walker with Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Back underway at the Etihad.

13:30 , George Flood

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

13:26 , George Flood

About as bad a first half as Arsenal could have had.

Three goals conceded, awful defending and a red card too.

This could get very ugly for Arteta if City keep their foot on the gas.

Half-time

13:21 , George Flood

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

Difficult to envisage how that first half could have been any worse for Arsenal, who are getting hammered and down to 10 men.

A long, long second 45 minutes awaits as the pressure continues to mount on Arteta.

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

13:21 , George Flood

If there was a white towel to be thrown in, Arteta should do so now.

GOAL! Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal | Gabriel Jesus 43'

13:15 , George Flood

43 mins: Easy as you like and City have a third before half-time.

Ederson plays the ball straight through the middle to Torres, who has oceans of space to charge forward and find Grealish out left.

The former Aston Villa captain then glides through and lays it on a plate for Jesus to tap in ahead of Kolasinac.

Relentless from City... this really could be any score. Arsenal are all over the place and can’t get out.

13:13 , George Flood

40 mins: City are pushing hard for a third goal before the interval now as they seek to hammer home that numerical advantage.

Jesus lays the ball off for Torres, whose drive is blocked behind by Tierney.

Guardiola’s men are moving the ball at speed now as Arsenal’s 10 men look to make it to the interval at 0-2.

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

13:09 , George Flood

The wheels are fully off now and going back down the road to London.

Xhaka gets a red card and he can have no complaints - studs up, off his feet.

RED CARD | Granit Xhaka, Arsenal

13:08 , George Flood

35 mins: It goes from bad to very bad to disastrous for Arsenal 10 minutes before the break as they are down to 10 men.

It’s a familiar silly act from Xhaka, who has two feet off the ground as he dives in recklessly on Cancelo.

No hesitation from Atkinson as he pulls out the red card.

Madness from one of Arsenal’s most experienced players.

Arteta fuming, but he can have few complaints.

Xhaka claims he got the ball and there wasn’t contact with the defender, but you can’t tackle like that.

13:06 , George Flood

34 mins: Wonderful feet from Cancelo, who beats Cedric all ends up with a tidy nutmeg before scuffing a cross into the side netting.

That skill deserved a far better end product!

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

13:05 , George Flood

The floodgates have closed, for now, as City seem to have taken their foot off the gas.

Still zero joy for Arsenal, though, who haven’t had a shot on target yet.

13:04 , George Flood

31 mins: Tierney and Arteta want a penalty after the Scottish full-back tussles and appears to get the better of Walker next to the byline before hitting the deck.

Nothing given and the Arsenal bench is incensed.

Didn’t look like much contact, it must be said.

13:03 , George Flood

29 mins: Leno gratefully holds the subsequent corner before referee Atkinson misses a foul from Rodri on Smith Rowe in midfield.

Half an hour gone and it’s obviously a mountain to climb for Arsenal, who have only really had a sniff courtesy of Ederson’s errors.

13:00 , George Flood

27 mins: Jesus chases after a lofted pass down the right flank and cops an accidental blow to the face from Kolasinac, who is booked for his troubles.

Slightly harsh, that. Arsenal want to know why that is a booking but the clash between Chambers and Laporte wasn’t penalised during the build-up to Torres’ goal.

Gundogan’s searching free-kick is headed behind by Tierney.

12:58 , George Flood

25 mins: Sloppy again from Ederson, who isn’t too comfortable kicking off his right foot.

Arsenal seize on the error and Aubameyang combines with Xhaka, who forces a decent save from the Brazilian.

However, the offside flag is up.

12:56 , George Flood

22 mins: City dominating possession now as you might expect, with Grealish’s foul on Saka giving Arsenal some temporary breathing room.

Cedric is then booked for bringing down City’s £100m man.

A long time left for the Portuguese to negotiate on a yellow with City in this sort of mood...

12:52 , George Flood

19 mins: Almost a way back for Arsenal as Ederson dallies on the ball and is closed down quickly by Smith Rowe, who watches on in agony as the ball deflects narrowly wide.

Guardiola won’t want to see that sort of complacency creeping in.

12:48 , George Flood

15 mins: There was a VAR check on that goal after Chambers went down holding his face following a tussle with Laporte.

It stands.

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

12:47 , George Flood

My word this could get ugly for Arsenal.

2-0 down and we’ve not played 15 minutes yet. More shambolic defending and a long way back now.

GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal | Ferran Torres 12'

12:45 , George Flood

12 mins: Leno stopped it from becoming 2-0 shortly after the opener, but now City have doubled their lead with only 12 minutes on the clock.

Again it’s absolutely abysmal defending, with no pressure whatsoever on Bernardo’s cross that somehow evades three defenders including Cedric and Chambers before Torres sneaks in to tap home from close range.

Desperate, desperate stuff from the Gunners, who are a mess at the back.

More pressure heaped on Arteta... this could get really ugly.

Simon Collings at Etihad Stadium

12:43 , George Flood

Arsenal had started brightly but they are behind now. That was all to easy for Gundogan there, who just peeled off Chambers to head home.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal | Ilkay Gundogan 7'

12:39 , George Flood

7 mins: City score with their first attack of the afternoon!

It’s good link-up play between Jesus and Bernardo out on the right, with Gundogan getting behind Chambers at the back post and flicking the Brazilian’s deep cross beyond the helpless Leno.

That is woeful defending from Chambers.

Despite their promising start, Arsenal are already behind.

12:38 , George Flood

6 mins: Very risky from Cancelo as he gives Saka a little shove at the back post following an enticing Tierney cross from the left.

Nothing given by referee Martin Atkinson and no chance of that being deemed an error to overturn, however.

More promising early build-up from Arsenal.

12:36 , George Flood

5 mins: Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno is called into action for the first time as he races out to gather a dangerous long ball intended for Ferran, who had done well to slip in the gap between two of those Gunners defenders down the right channel.

12:35 , George Flood

3 mins: This has been a decent start from Arsenal in the midday sunshine, knocking the ball around nicely and with purpose.

Saka aims a cross in towards Cedric, but City deal with the danger.

It looks like a back five for Arsenal and Odegaard alongside Xhaka in midfield, by the way...

Kick-off!

12:32 , George Flood

Underway in today’s lunchtime Premier League clash.

Will this be business as usual for City against Arsenal, or can the Gunners spring a shock?

12:27 , George Flood

Here come the teams at the Etihad!

A wonderful sunny day in Manchester.

Brilliant conditions for some stylish football...

12:22 , George Flood

Manchester City are unchanged from their 5-0 drubbing of newly-promoted Norwich on this ground seven days ago.

John Stones is fit enough for a place on the bench as Aymeric Laporte continues alongside Ruben Dias in the heart of defence.

12:07 , George Flood

Back three for Arsenal?

11:59 , George Flood

So is that a back three for Arsenal with Sead Kolasinac - who has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce this week - and Calum Chambers keeping their places, lining up alongside Rob Holding?

And will Martin Odegaard - making his second Premier League debut - or Emile Smith Rowe line up alongside Granit Xhaka in midfield?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leads the line again as expected after his treble against West Brom.

It’s four changes from the loss to Chelsea... Pablo Mari, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Gabriel Martinelli all drop to the bench and Nicolas Pepe misses out with illness.

Arteta: My methods at Arsenal won’t change

11:15 , George Flood

Former Pep Guardiola protege Arteta - who goes up against his mentor once again today - was also asked if he had ever questioned his methods during a difficult start to his managerial career...

“No, not the direction,” he said.

“You have to be able to adapt. You have to be able to see what is happening and how can you help the team and the individuals on the pitch, with your speech, or with the way you communicate with them, or what you are demanding them to do, and adapt a little bit.

“But the direction is not going to change.”

Arteta determined to turn Arsenal fortunes around

11:07 , George Flood

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mikel Arteta insisted that he remains more committed than ever to getting Arsenal back on the right path.

"I cannot have more energy, more determination and more desire to turn things around," he said.

"I I think nobody has that more than myself at the moment.

"It is not to do with that, it is because I know I am looking in the opposite way and when we are doing well, when people are enjoying, when people feel part of what we are doing, you get people happy - and when we have that power I just focus on that.

"There is always going to be people that are unhappy. I haven't see any single fan with a manager, with players, that are happy when we are losing football matches. It just doesn't happen and it is not realistic."

Arsenal predicted lineup

10:52 , George Flood

Meanwhile, the below is how Standard Sport’s Simon Collings believes Arsenal will shape up this afternoon, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back leading the line in the Premier League after his Carabao Cup treble in midweek.

It’s likely to be a second PL debut for Martin Odegaard, with Calum Chambers in at right-back instead of Cedric Soares.

One big question for Arteta today is Nicolas Pepe or Emile Smith Rowe?

Leno; Chambers, Holding, Mari, Tierney; Lokonga, Xhaka; Pepe, Odegaard, Saka; Aubameyang

Man City predicted lineup

10:48 , George Flood

Official team news is on the way in around 40 minutes’ time, but here is how Standard Sport sees the hosts lining up today with no new striker through the door.

This XI would see Jack Grealish - who scored his first City goal against Norwich - in a deeper role, with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling replacing Bernardo Silva and Ferran Torres.

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; Rodri, Gundogan, Grealish; Jesus, Sterling, Mahrez

10:32 , George Flood

And here’s the Silva statue...

Man City unveil Kompany and Silva statues

10:29 , George Flood

Man City have now officially unveiled their new steel statues outside the Etihad paying homage to club legends Vincent Kompany and David Silva.

Here’s what both players had to say about the honour....

Kompany

“I didn’t really expect to be recognised by such a great club in that way.

“My wife is from Manchester, my kids are born in Manchester, and they go back to a place where they can see something that represents what their dad has achieved and that is something that I can’t describe.

“The first time I saw the statue I couldn’t believe how big it was, but then again, I’m a big boy, so fair enough! And then especially the pose, for me it means a lot.”

 (PA)
(PA)

Silva

“Being at City changed my life. I’m proud of what we did together and I feel emotional that it has been recognised like this,” said Silva, whose statue captures the midfielder with his foot on the ball and looking up.

“When I first saw the statue, I felt good, I thought it was like me. This statue really represents the way I like to play, I love the pose the sculptor has chosen.

“It really reminds me of those times I was on the pitch playing and that moment when I had to find the striker.”

City will also unveil a third statue in tribute to Sergio Aguero next year.

Man City vs Arsenal prediction

10:13 , George Flood

It almost feels as if Arsenal’s season will not get going until after the international break and it is difficult to see them upsetting the champions on their own patch.

Man City 3-0 Arsenal

Arsenal team news: Saka shakes off knee issue

10:10 , George Flood

Arsenal have been boosted this afternoon by the availability of Bukayo Saka, who is expected to play despite suffering a knock to his knee against West Brom on Wednesday.

£50million defender Ben White is being monitored after missing two matches following a positive Covid-19 test, but Eddie Nketiah and Thomas Partey (both ankle) remain sidelined, while Gabriel got an outing for the Under-23s against Tottenham on Friday as he closes in on a return from a knee injury.

Hector Bellerin could be fit to feature after a thigh problem.

Man City team news: De Bruyne and Foden still out

Man City remain without reigning PFA Player of the Year Kevin De Bruyne, who featured as a late substitute in the opening day defeat by Tottenham but has since been ruled out again with the lingering ankle injury sustained with Belgium at Euro 2020.

Fellow playmaker Phil Foden, meanwhile, is not expected to return from the foot issue he suffered with England over the summer until after the upcoming international break.

Welcome to Man City vs Arsenal LIVE coverage!

09:55 , George Flood

Good morning and welcome to Standard Sport’s latest LIVE Premier League coverage as a bumper weekend of action begins with a heavyweight clash between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad.

City will be looking to shake off the significant disappointment of missing out on high-profile deals for Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo last week and build on last week’s 5-0 demolition of newly-promoted Norwich, which came on the back of defeat to Tottenham and in the Community Shield against Leicester.

Listless losses to Brentford and Chelsea have only piled the pressure on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who did gain some much-needed respite at The Hawthorns on Wednesday as captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang notched a hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition of young West Brom in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

However, the Gunners’ recent record against City is woeful to put it mildly and they face a huge task to avoid losing their first three league matches of a season for the first time since 1954/55.

Stay tuned for match build-up, latest team news and live updates, with Simon Collings in attendance at the Etihad!
