Ederson is set to return for Manchester City’s crucial game against Chelsea, but Bernardo Silva is suspended.

Pep Guardiola knows he can’t afford to slip up against Frank Lampard’s high-flying side after seeing Liverpool open up a nine-point gap on them before the international break.

City’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield left them in fourth place in the Premier League table and with a mountain to climb to retain their title.

Ederson was absent from that game after suffering a muscle injury, with deputy Claudio Bravo heavily criticised for Liverpool’s third goal.

But the Brazilian returned to training this week and is expected to resume in goal against Chelsea.

But Guardiola will still be left with a decision to make over a defence that has looked vulnerable in the absence of the departed Vincent Kompany and injured Aymeric Laporte.

His decision to play Fernandinho ahead of Nicolas Otamendi against Liverpool underlined his ongoing uncertainty about the Argentine in the biggest games.

Benjamin Mendy was also a surprise omission from that match, but could return on Saturday.

Possible Man City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Walker, Stones, Fernandinho, Mendy; De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva; Mahrez, Aguero, Sterling
