Cardell Hayes was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for killing former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith and wounding Smith's wife after a traffic accident in April 2016.
Hayes was convicted of manslaughter in December in a New Orleans court for shooting Smith after Hayes' Hummer rear-ended Smith's Mercedes SUV. Hayes also was convicted of attempted manslaughter for shooting and injuring Racquel Smith.
The Advocate.com reports Hayes received a 25-year sentence for the manslaughter conviction, and a 15-year sentence for the attempted manslaughter charge, to be served concurrently.
Saints coach Sean Payton and Racquel Smith testified during the sentencing Wednesday, remembering the late Smith for his contributions on and off the field and devotion to his family.
A former All-American at Ohio State, Smith played with the Saints from 2004 to 2013. The defensive end had 13 sacks in 2009, when the Saints went on to win the Super Bowl.
