Man sparks outrage with ‘childish’ response to his girlfriend’s purchase: ‘You totally overreacted’

A boyfriend is upset that his girlfriend bought a necklace for herself after he promised to buy it for her.

The guy took to Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum to see if his feelings were justified. He explained that his girlfriend comes from a wealthy family, while he does not. For her an expensive necklace was very little, for him, he had to save for weeks.

“I love her because she’s not spoiled (like her siblings) and very generous. Too generous,” he said. “Even when we first started dating in college, I told her that she didn’t have to keep buying me all these expensive items and to just give me the money directly instead, haha. About a month ago, we were just strolling through the mall and she saw a necklace that she liked and started reaching for her purse. I had just gotten a raise so I was feeling pretty good and I told her that I would get it for her. We walked over and I asked how much for the necklace. The man said a four-figure dollar amount.”

He was outraged by the price but he could see that his girlfriend wanted it. When they got back to the car, he said he would buy it for her. He kept his promise after a month of saving.

“I got them and tried to surprise her with [the necklace],” he wrote. “I say tried because she looked confused for a moment and then said, ‘Oh, thanks babe but I already bought [the necklace].’ I said, ‘What do you mean? I told you I was going to get them. Why would you get them?’ She said something like, ‘I know how you are with money, and I honestly thought you weren’t going to get them, but I really appreciate it!’ And I said something like, ‘How do you appreciate it when you already bought it?’ and I just tossed the stupid thing in the garbage and left.”

She tried calling him, but he wouldn’t pick up.

“Then she texted me: ‘You’re overreacting. I’ll pay you back.’ I texted her back: ‘It’s not about the money. It’s about you not trusting me.’ She texted: ‘I do trust you. What are you talking about?’ But I didn’t respond,” he said.

Reddit didn’t think agree with how the boyfriend handled things.

“Your surprise backfired. It happens. You completely overreacted and threw a childish temper tantrum,” one person said.

“You totally overreacted and come out as the asshole here,” another wrote.

“You decided to tie your worth as a partner/masculinity to buying an item you don’t value and consider a waste of money to prove what exactly?” someone added.
