Cody Gakpo has revealed Manchester United rejected the chance to sign him before he moved to Liverpool. The Dutch forward arrived on Merseyside from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for an initial fee of around £37million, with add-ons likely to take the deal past the £40m mark.

Gakpo has gone on to score 37 times and claim 14 assists in 111 games for the Reds, winning the League Cup last season under Jurgen Klopp. Along with United, Real Madrid were also linked with a move for the forward before he moved to Anfield.

And now speaking about United's interest in him, the 25-year-old revealed to TNT Sports: "In the end they didn't want me anymore, then I stayed here and I could go to two other clubs and I prayed about it to find the answer and some goals that I scored.

"In the end if I scored a hattrick I should stay and I scored the first hattrick of my career so I couldn't get a more clear answer. That guided me a lot and besides that my parents guide me a lot with the things I do."

Gakpo will come face-to-face with his former team on Wednesday evening when Liverpool travel to PSV in the Champions League. The Reds have already qualified for the last 16 but will be looking to continue their 100 percent record in Europe this season.

“Pretty strange,” he said when asked in Liverpool's pre-match press conference how it would feel to face his former side. “I’ve never been in the away dressing room so it will be my first time.

"But when the game starts I think all those things will fade away and we will be focused on the game and we are going for the win.”
