The Spaniard arrived at Old Trafford in 2011 and has since gone on to make 487 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Last season was arguably United's most disappointing in decades as the Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League table and succumbed to a number of heavy defeats.

Speaking with ESPN, De Gea revealed the 2021/22 campaign was a disaster, saying: "For everyone it was a very tough season, embarrassing sometimes. Some games were a mess, a disaster. So we should learn from last season.

"That cannot happen again because it was tough, it was painful to be there, and we should not be losing games 4-0 or 5-0. It was unacceptable. Sometimes you have to feel pain to go up and keep going." When asked whether last season would act as motivation, he added: "I hope so. I hope everyone reflects. I have seen some things and think about last season because it was a disaster. "I think it's a good point to start, like, 'Guys, we cannot do the same as we did last season because it was a disaster.' I really hope we're going to play much better."

The Spaniard has a contract at Old Trafford which expires in 2023, though there is an option of another year. De Gea has not been offered a new deal, but is hoping to extend his stay, saying: "I haven't talked with anyone yet, but of course I would be really happy to be here for as long as they want, because I want to be here for more years."

The player also revealed that he would consider staying in Manchester until the end of his career.

He added: "Yeah, if it's possible, of course. If they let me stay here, I will stay here, for sure. I'm really comfortable, really happy and hopefully, before I leave, we can win something."
