Man Utd vs Arsenal - LIVE!

Michael Carrick will be in the United dugout, but interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be in the stands watching on as he new club host Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Carrick has steadied the ship since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, beating Villarreal and then earning a point against Chelsea, and will be looking to end his very short tenure on a high. Victory would take United to within three points of the top four.

Arsenal will be looking to produce their top form in a big game, something they have struggled with at times this season. An impressive run from Mikel Arteta’s side means a win tonight would take them into fourth, and heavy defeats on the road against Man City and more recently Liverpool will leave Arsenal keen to produce a real statement.

When the sides met at Old Trafford last season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty was enough to give the visitors a 1-0 victory.

FULL TIME

22:11 , Matt Verri

Man United 3-2 Arsenal

Michael Carrick signs off his brief spell in charge with victory over the Gunners! It was an entertaining, and at times chaotic, watch at Old Trafford, but United have come out on top.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again the hero, scoring twice to earn the win in front of Ralf Rangnick watching on.

22:10 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Tavares with the long throw... but it’s not very long at all, and gets nowhere near the Arsenal shirts in the box.

That will pretty much be that.

22:08 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Well worked from Arsenal, Saka gets in on the left. Ball into the box, so many Arsenal bodies in there, but United win the header.

And Partey then fouls Martial, which will kill another minute.

22:06 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Van de Beek comes on, to replace Fernandes. United running down the clock.

Five minutes added on.

22:04 , Matt Verri

88 mins: United should really have sealed the win.

They come flying forward on the break, Sancho with the ball on the left, and Fernandes and Ronaldo charging up the pitch on the right.

Sancho plays it across to Fernandes, but his strike it blocked. Ronaldo off for United, replaced by Martial.

22:02 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Saka finds space again on the right side of the box, as Tavares’ cross comes in from the other wing. But he takes too long to get it out of his feet and get the shot away, and it’s blocked for a corner.

A couple of times he’s got in at the back post, but hasn’t made the most of it.

22:01 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Fernandes completely slows the play down as United win it back again. The home fans want them to keep going on the attack, but the players just want to see this one out.

22:00 , Matt Verri

84 mins: Arsenal with more and more of the ball, pushing United back.

And now the hosts can break, after Telles plays it down the line to Lingard. Ran out of room though, and chips it into the arms of Ramsdale.

21:57 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Tavares with a deep cross into the box, and Telles flicks it away. Arsenal with plenty of numbers in attack now... can they create a chance to get themselves level?

21:55 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Nketiah and Lacazette on for the visitors. Aubameyang and Odegaard the two to make way. Another disappointing night for the Arsenal captain.

21:54 , Matt Verri

77 mins: WHAT A MISS!

Oh Aubameyang. Ball into the box, scuffed effort falls straight into the path of Aubameyang from six yards out, and he’s cushioned it towards goal, but De Gea saves it. Had to put that away.

Offside flag didn’t go up, but he probably was just off. Poor finish regardless.

21:51 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Arsenal break with Martinelli, and he drives forward from well inside his own half. Eventually releases it out wide to Aubameyang, who cuts inside and curls an effort into the arms of De Gea.

Martinelli was there for the return ball, had it come.

Hammered down the middle

21:50 , Matt Verri

21:49 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Arsenal with a free-kick in a dangerous position. Odegaard to take, and he could do with redeeming himself for that rash challenge.

Lindelof just about heads it behind for a corner. Odegaard will take this too, and United clear it.

21:48 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Saka on for Arsenal now, replacing Smith Rowe. 20 minutes left for the Gunners to get something from this.

Saka has come on to play on the right, with Martinelli moving over to the left.

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

21:46 , Matt Verri

I am not sure Arsenal can have any complaints there. That was rash from Odegaard and, once again, Arsenal concede from their own error.

GOAL! Man United 3-2 Arsenal | Cristiano Ronaldo 70'

21:45 , Matt Verri

RONALDO SMASHES IT HOME.

Straight down the middle, and Ramsdale dives to his left. Lovely penalty, Ronaldo has two, United have three, and Arsenal have it all to do again.

21:44 , Matt Verri

68 mins: PENALTY UNITED!

It’s a really poor challenge from Odegaard, and United have the chance to take the lead again.

21:43 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Penalty? No. Sancho plays it into the path of Fred, who is bursting into the box.

Odegaard slides in, he’s the wrong side of Fred, but no penalty given. They will check that for sure. Referee going over to check it, and we know how this usually ends.

21:42 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Great defending from Gabriel. Sancho with space in the Arsenal half, and Rashford is there to be played in to his right. The centre-back reads it though, and gets out well to intercept.

Both teams looking dangerous when they get forward, neither defensive looking particularly secure.

21:41 , Matt Verri

65 mins: Ball over the top, and Aubameyang is in. Telles doesn’t deal with that well at all.

Tight angle for the Arsenal captain though, and De Gea punches away the fierce effort.

21:38 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Dalot has not played much football recently, but you wouldn’t know it. Does really well to get back and tackle Smith Rowe, who for a brief second looked to be in.

Arsenal equaliser came 90 seconds after Ronaldo’s goal.

21:35 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Odegaard fouled by Fred, lovely touch after a Smith Rowe pass.

Tavares then tries to take on two United players... beats one, but Dalot slides in to halt his progress.

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

21:34 , Matt Verri

As I said, this is end to end and being played like it’s the final 10 minutes. Brilliant stuff, even if the defending leaves a lot to be desired.

21:32 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Who knows what happens now! Brilliant response from Arsenal, who have looked dangerous whenever they’ve got numbers forward.

Here’s how Ronaldo put United in front...

GOAL! Man United 2-2 Arsenal | Martin Odegaard 54'

21:30 , Matt Verri

AND ARSENAL ARE LEVEL AGAIN MINUTES LATER!

Partey plays a lovely switch out to the right, and Martinelli is in space. Much like Rashford, he does well to pick out the perfect pass.

It’s Odegaard in the box, and he sweeps it home with his right foot. 2-2!

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

21:29 , Matt Verri

It’s been an open start to the second-half and in the end it’s United who punish Arsenal. Frustrating for Arsenal as that, again was their own doing, as they gave the ball away.

GOAL! Man United 2-1 Arsenal | Cristiano Ronaldo 52'

21:28 , Matt Verri

RONALDO PUTS UNITED IN FRONT!

Dalot plays a brilliant reverse pass with Tavares out of position, and Rashford is in on the right wing. He takes his time, picks out Ronaldo in the box, and he’s not going to miss from there.

United have turned it around.

21:26 , Matt Verri

50 mins: United look threatening already. Rashford up against Elneny in the box, who narrows the angle well, and Ramsdale can easily claim the cross.

The hosts come again though, Rashford lets fly from 25 yards. Well held by Ramsdale.

21:23 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Gabriel ‘header’ might have been generous, came off his back as he stooped down. A great save regardless.

And there’s another one, this time from Ramsdale! Ronaldo twists inside and out, completely beats Partey, but Ramsdale spreads himself big and gets in the way.

21:22 , Matt Verri

46 mins: Bright from Martinelli right at the start of second period, winning a corner on the right wing.

Comes in, Gabriel wins the header... BRILLIANT SAVE! Arsenal so close to taking the lead again, but De Gea sticks out a right hand.

21:20 , Matt Verri

United get us underway again, second-half begins.

21:19 , Matt Verri

Eight shots from both sides in the first half, with United having 57% of possession. Arsenal need to get back to how they played in those opening 15 minutes you feel, became very negative after the goal.

Players back out...

21:14 , Matt Verri

Replays of that Smith Rowe goal are not kind to De Gea.

Went down after Fred stood on his ankle, perhaps thinking it was an Arsenal boot and he would get the foul. The goalkeeper was up and about a minute later, so there was certainly no serious injury.

Fernandes levels things up

21:07 , Matt Verri

HALF TIME

21:05 , Matt Verri

Man United 1-1 Arsenal

And that’s half time. Big goal for United before the break, Fernandes finishing off a well-worked move.

The Gunners took the lead in strange circumstances, with Smith Rowe lashing it in as De Gea was lying on the ground facing the opposite way, after his own player hurt him.

Anyone’s guess what happens in the second-half!

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

21:02 , Matt Verri

An awful time for Arsenal to concede, but you feel like that they invited that to happen. After getting the goal they dropped far too deep. Game on.

21:02 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Four minutes added on at the end of the half. McTominay into the book as he brings down Partey.

Arsenal think they should have a corner after the free-kick is flicked behind, but the referee gives a goal-kick.

GOAL! Man United 1-1 Arsenal | Bruno Fernandes 44'

21:00 , Matt Verri

UNITED ARE LEVEL!

Really well worked goal. Maguire out to Sancho, who plays it inside to Fred who has made a great run into the box.

Pulled back to Fernandes who has so much space in the box, and he guides it into the far corner.

20:57 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Elneny and Gabriel dismissed from the crowd around the ball. Partey and Odegaard left.

It’s Partey... straight into Aubameyang’s shoulder, and it loops behind for a goal-kick. Not how Arsenal planned that one out.

20:56 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Partey too strong for Fred in midfield and Arsenal can get back on the attack. Aubameyang tries to flick it inside, but McTominay can intercept, and just about stops it from going out for a corner.

Partey then brought down by Fred, about 25 yards out. Great position for an effort at goal.

20:54 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Big chance for Arsenal, and Martinelli has not made the most of it at all.

Odegaard does brilliantly, lovely touch to the Brazilian on the right and he can burst into the box. Goes for the shot on the stretch, and it dribbles wide. Smith Rowe was standing on the penalty spot completely free had he looked up.

20:52 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Maguire fancies a goal tonight. United captain comes out from the back to rob Elneny of the ball, and has a strike from outside the box.

Better than his previous effort, but Ramsdale gets down well.

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

20:51 , Matt Verri

Arsenal have dropped far too deep since the goal. They’re inviting Man United onto them and it’s bringing so much pressure. They need to get out.

20:50 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Much better from Fernandes, through to Telles and it cuts Arsenal open. He has time to look up and play it into the box, but Arsenal get back well to stop it getting to Ronaldo.

Fernandes then goes down under a challenge from White... no penalty.

20:47 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Tavares goes down, after slipping and then runs into Dalot’s arm. Arsenal man stays down, and United are understandably in no mood to kick the ball out after the incident for the goal.

Maguire with a great diagonal pass, but Fernandes’ through ball is straight out of play.

20:46 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Maguire picks it up 30 yards out, and the fans urge him to shoot. He does, and it’s miles over the bar.

United captain is blaming the ball. Not sure that was the biggest issue there.

20:44 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Arsenal look to break from the corner, and they have the numbers. Aubameyang maybe holds on to for it a bit too long, and when he tries to pass it on to Tavares, Dalot comes sliding in.

20:43 , Matt Verri

27 mins: United fans screaming at their team to get it forward. Fernandes puts it through inside Tavares, but the left-back gets there ahead of Dalot to concede the corner.

Lindelof sends a looping flick towards the goal, and Ramsdale has to tip it over.

20:40 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Ramsdale scuffs his clearance, but gets away with it as it runs through to Odegaard. Tomiyasu then wins a free-kick, much to the frustration of the United players.

20:38 , Matt Verri

23 mins: United very much on top since the goal, Arsenal struggling to get going again.

Ronaldo flicks it across to Dalot, who brings it into the box and pulls it back, but the Gunners get it clear. Pressure building though.

20:37 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Ronaldo sets up for the big bicycle kick, but White gets a crucial flick on it to take it out of his path.

Strange atmosphere now... such an unusual incident!

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

20:36 , Matt Verri

“The whole stadium is baffled here. We are all waiting to see what happens and there is no screen or tannoy to explain.

“A few Manchester United players exchange words with Smith Rowe but he explains he didn’t know what had happened. A bizarre moment but Arsenal will take it.”

Here’s that bizarre goal...

20:34 , Matt Verri

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Arsenal | Emile Smith Rowe 14'

20:32 , Matt Verri

GOAL GIVEN! Arsenal do have the lead at Old Trafford!

It had to be given, even if the United players are absolutely furious. But it was Fred who injured De Gea, so no reason for play to be stopped.

20:30 , Matt Verri

14 mins: The contact that injured De Gea was with Fred, so there’s definitely no foul.

Referee has ruled it out, but that was only because the goalkeeper was on the ground injured. No offside, no foul... but apparently no goal. Controversial decision this.

20:29 , Matt Verri

13 mins: That was awkward for De Gea. Tomiyasu’s cross is headed straight up by Lindelof and it loops towards the goal. Tipped over as it came down, would probably have hit the bar.

Smith Rowe scores... OR NOT?! The Arsenal midfielder has lashed it in from the edge of the box, but De Gea is lying down on the ground. What happens here?!

20:27 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Fred pinches the ball off Partey, and United have numbers and space in the Arsenal half.

Ronaldo picks it up and opts to ignore the options, letting fly with his left foot from range. Scuffed effort, well wide.

20:25 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Arsenal are looking really bright. Partey plays it into Smith Rowe, who swivels beautifully and slides it through to Aubameyang. He works it onto his left foot, but there’s no power in the shot and it’s an easy save for De Gea.

Simon Collings at Old Trafford

20:24 , Matt Verri

Arsenal won’t be too unhappy with this first 10 minutes. They’re enjoying a bit of the ball and look solid. Steady stuff that’ll please Arteta.

20:23 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Partey drives forward, and he has Aubameyang to his right and Smith Rowe to the left. Tries to poke it through, but United win it back. Things briefly opened up there, Arsenal getting joy winning the ball in the United half.

Dalot with an effort from outside the box, well held by Ramsdale as Ronaldo came charging in for any rebound.

20:22 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Good pressing from Aubameyang wins the ball back from Lindelof, high up the pitch. Gunners with a nice shape high up the pitch, and then picking their moments to fully press.

20:20 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Sancho tries to knock it past Tomiyasu, but the right-back does really well and wins it back.

United fans with a banner, paying tribute to their former manager...

20:18 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Maguire heads it well away, and Fernandes leads the break up field. Eventually whips a decent ball in, but Arsenal get it away.

20:17 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Promising start from the Gunners. Sancho with a loose pass into the United box, and Aubameyang pounces. Hammers an effort at goal, deflected behind from a corner.

White wins the header... CLEARED OFF THE LINE. Rashford just about hacks it over the bar. Arsenal so close to taking the lead.

Odegaard has an effort blocked, and the Gunners will have a third corner.

KICK-OFF

20:15 , Matt Verri

We are underway at Old Trafford, as Arsenal kick things off!

20:12 , Matt Verri

Here we go then. Aubameyang leads the visitors out, with Maguire and the United team just behind.

First camera shot of Rangnick in the stands. There will be many, many, many more to come.

20:10 , Matt Verri

Five minutes until kick-off, players will be out shortly.

Big, big night for both sides. Arsenal can move up into the top four, the United players will see this as an audition with Rangnick watching on... plenty to play for!

20:02 , Matt Verri

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the hero last season, scoring a penalty as Arsenal beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford. That was the Gunners’ first win at the ground in the least since 2006.

Arsenal’s captain hasn’t scored in his last four matches... no better time to get back on the scoresheet for his side.

Arteta asked how he thinks United will approach match

“Very difficult to predict. That was one of the tricky things in the preparation, because we don’t know much input [Rangnick] has had in the team. We have to wait and see.”

Carrick explains selection

19:44 , Matt Verri

“Nemanja [Matic] has picked up a little niggle, he felt his hamstring so he’s out.

“Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], Hudson-Odoi stood on his hand the other day, so he’s in a fair bit of pain. It was touch and go, but he didn’t make it for today.

“Harry [Maguire] is back into the team. I thought Eric [Bailly] did ever so well the other day, but it’s a decision we had to make.”

For the Gunners, Gabriel Martinelli replaces Bukayo Saka, who is only fit enough to make the bench, while Mohamed Elneny comes into midfield for Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Prediction

Carrick’s unspectacular caretaker stint has somewhat steadied the ship for United while Arsenal have been good but are still struggling a bit against the bigger teams in the league. As a result, this one may not live long in the memory.
