Ex-Birmingham City talisman Clayton Donaldson has been appointed Head of Development at York City.

The former Blues striker scored over 50 goals for The Minstermen across two spells, most recently netting eight in the 2021/22 season as City won promotion from the National League North.

The 40-year-old secured his UEFA A Diploma in October 2023 and from the start of next season will oversee the development side operation, which will consist players from the Under-19s and fringe first teamers.

Discussing his return to York City, Donaldson told the club website : “To be back here… I’m over the moon. I can’t wait to get started. I’m a York City fan. York to me is like my second home.

“It’s the perfect fit for me and hopefully I can help other youngsters come through and start their journey here as well. I’ve been there; lived it, experienced it and now it’s for me to pass that knowledge down to the next generation.

“I’ve been in football 24 years so it would be stupid of me to not carry on and pass that experience on to the younger generation, and to provide that pathway into the first team.”

Speaking on the appointment, Co-Chair Matt Uggla said: “We think Clayton is the perfect person to come in and lead that development team and be Head of Development at York City given his relationship with the club and the contacts in the game, we’re really excited to have him.

Donaldson spent three seasons at Blues from 2014 and scored 33 goals in 117 games enjoying his best period under Gary Rowett.

Un-Ravel

Former Birmingham City loanee Ravel Morrison has revealed why he didn’t sign permanently for the club. In 2012 Morrison was brought into the club by Lee Clark having struggled to fulfil his huge potential at Old Trafford.

He had a very good season, scoring three in 30 games and turning in some mesmerising displays with his outlandish skill. He then returned to West Ham, struggled to make a breakthrough and was sold to Lazio.

He then reappeared on Blues’ radar in the summer of 2017 when Harry Redknapp was in charge. He even went on the summer tour to Austria but no deal was forthcoming.

The former Manchester United trainee told The Stomping Ground ’s Beyond The Playpodcast: “I would have stayed at Birmingham, it was just the reason they weren’t in the Prem, that was the only thing. My parent club West Ham was in the Prem, I have obviously moved from Manchester United to play in the Prem, I didn’t want to stay in the Champ.”

The 31-year-old now plays in the United Arab Emirates club Precision FC.

Hot-shot

Young striker Frank Tattum marked his second game back for Birmingham City’s Under-21s by scoring two goals in a 3-2 victory over Leeds United. The 19-year-old, who has been out for several months after a pre-season injury, bagged a brace of headers in the Premier League Cup tie.

He followed that up with two more goals in his third game back, scoring one in each half before Sheffield United came back to draw 2-2 in the Professional Development League clash in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Further down the age scale Blues’ U18s have found out they must beat Harrogate Town to book an FA Youth Cup third round tie with local rivals West Brom. Blues face Harrogate Town at the Exercise Stadium on Tuesday, November 19.
