Manchester United need to increase their cash offer for Darwin Nunez if Benfica are to let their star striker go, a report has claimed.

New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster his front line knowing it is an area that needs addressing. Cristiano Ronaldo won the club’s Player of the Year award this season following his outstanding return from Old Trafford.

However, at 37, he has limited time at the top level. What’s more, United’s two previous striker signings – Edinson Cavani and Odion Ighalo – did not have much shelf life left either.

There is therefore a sense at Man Utd that they need a new long-term striker option to lead them into the future.

And after Uruguay international Nunez’s fantastic season at Benfica, the Red Devils have made him a key target.

In fact, United have reportedly made their first bid for the 22-year-old. That offer was worth a total of £81million – £64million up front and £17million in bonuses. The Old Trafford club also reportedly included fringe midfielder Andreas Pereira in the offer.

According to the latest from Correio de Manha, though, Benfica have rejected the proposal.

Journalist Paulo Catarro told the newspaper: “Benfica have already told those responsible at United that the deal requires more money.

“Ultimately a bonus package can be included but involving players such as Andreas Pereira would be difficult.”

The newspaper further suggests that around £8.5million more – which is the figure United value Pereira at – may be enough to convince Benfica.

The Portuguese giants are aware that they will likely lose Nunez this summer. As such, they want to make sure they get maximum profit from their star man while they have the chance.

Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 games this season, including six in 10 in the Champions League.

United should definitely go the extra mile and get the Nunez deal over the line.

They have faced criticism for such big investments in the past, with Paul Pogba’s move not working out as hoped.

However, Nunez looks an obvious goalscoring threat and his goals in Europe provide added transfer incentive.

Man Utd may not be playing at Europe’s top table next season, with Europa League football on the agenda instead.

Nevertheless, Nunez looks like the man who could fire United back into the Champions League.
