Manchester United have announced Mason Mount will miss the upcoming matches against Nottingham Forest and Arsenal in the Premier League due to injury.

The midfielder played in both of the opening matches this season against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, although he failed to impress in either match. His midfield relationship with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes has also come under scrutiny, with Erik ten Hag defending his set-up in the middle ahead of the Spurs game last week.

But the Dutchman will have to change something for this weekend’s home clash against Forest, with Mount ruled out of the encounter and won’t play again until after the international break in September.

“Mason Mount is set to miss Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest due to an injury picked up in last weekend’s encounter with Tottenham Hotspur,” the club said via their website.

“The small complaint is expected to keep Mount out until the international break next month. The England midfielder has started both of our Premier League games so far this season after making his competitive debut for the club in last week’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.”

The injury also puts Mount’s involvement in England’s double header against Ukraine and Scotland next month into doubt. Assuming the ex-Chelsea star is fit to play after the international break, his first match could come against Brighton & Hove Albion on 16 September.

With Mount out, Ten Hag could start with Christian Eriksen in the middle, while Scott McTominay is another option for the United boss. Donny van de Beek and Hannibal are also alternatives, although the former is expected to leave United soon.
