Man Utd have beaten West Ham to an agreement for Tyrell Malacia, and the finer details of a potential transfer masterstroke have come to light.

The 22-year-old Dutchman had looked on course to join Lyon. Fabrizio Romano reported a deal totalling around £13m had been verbally agreed. However, the French side were having difficulties financing the move.

That left the door ajar for rival suitors to pounce. Per Romano, both Manchester United and West Ham sought to strike, but is the former who have made the breakthrough.

In a tweet confirming details of United’s agreement, the transfer guru noted ‘West Ham tried to hijack the deal too’.

But it is the Red Devils that have struck gold. Indeed, Feyenoord director, Frank Arnesen, told 1908NL (via the Athletic): “The agreement with Man United is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell.

“If Malacia says yes, then a transfer to Manchester United is imminent.”

Romano reported United’s agreement is worth £13m plus a potential further £1.73m in add-ons.

The Athletic confirmed those numbers in their report, though did acknowledge personal terms with the player are yet to be agreed.

The publication also noted Feyenoord will include a sell-on clause into any transfer. The percentage it will be set at is unknown at present.

What aided Man Utd’s transfer steal?

Lyon’s inability to close out a deal is the first and primary factor that helped Erik ten Hag’s side.

Had they been able to muster up the majority of their verbally agreed deal up front, United’s would not have had the opportunity to pounce.

Furthermore, Malacia shares the same agent with Frenkie de Jong – a man United are in regular contact with.

Additionally, the chance to work with fellow countryman Ten Hag may be another factor. The Dutchman dominated the Eredivisie during his time at Ajax and is known as a forward thinking and progressive manager.
