Manchester United are reportedly set to make a bid for Ruben Neves as Wolves move for a midfield compatriot.

Bruno Lage’s side are rumoured to be close to completing a deal for Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Palhinha for £17m.

And that is said to have opened the door for United to move for Neves, who’s also been linked with both Arsenal and Barcelona.

Wolves want around £70m for services and that is said to have put many of his suitors off, but apparently not United.

Wolves’ move for Palhinha – a player United were also interested in – is said to have ‘triggered’ the Red Devils to bid for Neves as new manager Erik ten Hag starts a rebuild at Old Trafford.

That’s according to 90min reporter Rob Blanchette, who tweeted: ‘#MUFC will take advantage of Joao Palhinha’s expected arrival at Wolves to trigger their offer for Ruben Neves.

‘United have scouted Palhinha but won’t compete for the player’s signature if Wolves agree a price for their Portuguese midfielder.’

United have already confirmed the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic leaving them light in midfield.

They’re thought to be close to agreeing a deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, but Express claim ‘United are keen on him, as well as Neves’.

United have been tracking Neves for some time and they were thought to be in talks with Wolves last summer.

Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips believes the 25-year-old would be an upgrade on the current options Ten Hag has at his disposal.

“He’s a quality player,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“He’s one of those players that always wants to get on the ball. For me, I think he’s an upgrade on McTominay and Fred.

“He’s got better distribution, he’s better on the ball – he’s absolute quality. He can score goals as well.

“I remember sitting on the bench at Molineux when Derby played Wolves, he scored that volley – incredible.

“He has developed into a top-class Premier League player. From a Wolves point of view, it’ll be gutting. He will have no problems getting into that Man United midfield – he’s fantastic.”
