Manchester United feel that Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez will suit their style of play better than Arsenal’s, according to a report.

Both Premier League clubs are chasing a deal for the Argentina international and have already made significant advances. United have gone furthest with a bid worth around £43million, but they have faced rejection.

Arsenal currently sit further behind in the race having offered around £38million for Martinez.

However, their interest in the versatile defender could be waning following a reported £5.9million bid for Benfica star Alex Grimaldo.

Nevertheless, that has not made life any easier for Man Utd, who are still trying to agree a fee with Ajax for Martinez. The Eredivisie giants are under no pressure to sell the 24-year-old and subsequently want as much profit as possible.

Speaking to Sky Sports (10/07, 11:40am), transfer reporter Melissa Reddy revealed that United – led by former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – feel Martinez will suit them better than he will Arsenal. Reddy also provided an update on United’s pursuit of Ajax forward Antony.

“With Lisandro Martinez, the outstanding thing is agreeing a fee with Ajax,” she said. “United are in advanced talks with Ajax and he’s an Arsenal target as well.

“No decision has been made between Martinez and the two clubs because no deal has been agreed. The player can’t choose unless there’s a valuation being met and the clubs have a basic agreement in place.

“The talk around the United camp is they’re confident about Martinez’s willingness to join the club.”

Man Utd want Lisandro Martinez, Antony

“He’s a player Ten Hag knows exceptionally well,” Reddy added on Martinez. “They feel United will best play to his strengths rather than Arsenal.

“With Antony, the new Ajax manager is desperate to keep hold of him.

“The price tag being quoted – around £70m – is not what United are wiling to pay. They are apprehensive on that deal and hesitant to engage with that one.”

While United’s highest bid for Martinez currently stands at £42million, The Times claims that Ten Hag wants his club to increase their offering.

Brazilian star Antony is another player Ajax are under no pressure to sell. Ten Hag, though, is looking to rekindle ties with those he knows best to kick-start his Old Trafford tenure.

United need signings through the door

The longer the wait goes on for United’s first statement signing of the window goes on, the more anxious fans will become.

In successive transfer windows they have seen their club struggle to sign a striker. In the end, they have previously settled for Odion Ighalo and Edinson Cavani, who were not standout successes.

As for the current transfer window, Man Utd had the chance to beat Liverpool to Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, but they backed out of a bidding war.

In defence, it remains a possibility that Arsenal could swoop in for Martinez, who they reportedly see as ideal left-back cover.

But fans will feel United have to pluck him away from Ajax to prevent fears of another gruelling transfer window setting in.
