Man Utd, Chelsea among five clubs ‘tracking’ Brighton sensation as player’s ‘priority’ is revealed
Man Utd, Chelsea and Tottenham are all reportedly ‘scouting’ Brighton and Hove Albion teenager Evan Ferguson ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 18-year-old signed for Brighton in 2021 from Bohemians and he has been one of the major breakout stars in the Premier League this season.
Ferguson has played 20 times for Brighton this term at senior level. He has grabbed seven goals and four assists across all competitions.
He has also established himself as part of Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland squad and he got on the scoresheet against Latvia last week.
His recent form has fuelled talk that he could earn himself a major transfer away from Brighton in the coming months.
He is being linked with Tottenham as a potential replacement for Harry Kane, who is being targeted by rivals Manchester United.
The Red Devils also have their eyes on Ferguson, though. According to Ben Jacobs, they have joined Chelsea and Tottenham in ‘tracking’ Ferguson but they are facing competition from Barcelona and Roma.
Jacobs does point out that Ferguson would be better off remaining at Brighton next season if they ‘qualify for Europe’.
‘Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Barcelona and Roma have all scouted Ferguson. This is normal since clubs know they have to track this type of player early and start building relationships ready for when they choose to move,’ Jacobs wrote for Caught Offside.
‘Ferguson is of appeal to all these top clubs because he has a bit of everything: he’s strong, clinical and intelligent… but perhaps most importantly from Brighton’s perspective, loyal.
‘Ferguson is contracted until 2026, so it’s very difficult for any club to prize him away this summer, at least at value, especially given Ferguson’s priority is game time, and if Brighton qualify for Europe there is really no reason for him to leave in 2023.’
Arsenal legend Ian Wright thinks Ferguson offers Brighton “another option” but they need to “play to his strengths”.
“I hope that he gets to play regularly and Brighton start playing to his strengths and get him involved more,” Wright said. “I’d get the ball into him as soon as possible through those lines because he links the play very well, he’s got very intelligent movement in that last third, and he wants to get into the box.
“That’s what I would do. You look at him – he’s good in the air, he’s good on the floor, he makes good movement in the box, so he’s somebody who has got all the attributes.
“Now how can we get it to him quicker? I’m not saying Brighton have to launch it but they’ve got another option now if he’s playing.”
