Man Utd, Chelsea among four Prem clubs ‘attacking’ Serie A man with €90m ‘starting point’ set
Man Utd and Chelsea are reportedly two of four Premier League clubs in the running to sign Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez next year.
The Argentina international has consistently been linked with a move to the Premier League over the past few seasons.
He was mentioned as a potential signing for Tottenham after Antonio Conte took over. This came after he scored 17 league goals to help Inter Milan win the Serie A title under the Italian.
To date, this has not come to fruition but talk of him leaving Inter is ramping up ahead of the start of the January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has been in fine form this term as he has grabbed seven goals and four assists in 16 outings across all competitions.
InterLive have now provided an update on Martinez’s situation. They state that Atletico Madrid are admirers of him but they are not able to pay Milan’s asking price.
They are not under pressure to sell their prized asset as he is under contract until 2026. It is claimed that the ‘starting point’ for Martinez will be €90m if Inter gets their way.
This figure is said to be ‘completely within reach’ for several Premier League clubs.
Man Utd, Newcastle United and Tottenham are mentioned as teams who will be on the ‘attack’ to sign the Inter Milan standout.
InterLive note that Chelsea ‘could be added’ as they are short on options in attacking areas. It is also mentioned that the Blues are ‘investing heavily to rejuvenate the squad’ under the club’s new owners.
The report even hints that Chelsea could use Romelu Lukaku as a makeweight in the transfer for Martinez.
The Belgium international is currently on loan at the Serie A side after he endured a troublesome season in 2021/22.
Lukaku is currently on a ‘dry loan’ at Inter Milan so the report thinks €40m plus the forward could be proposed by Chelsea in an attempt to sign Martinez.
This bid could be made next summer according to the report but they warn Chelsea that Inter Milan would react ‘negatively’.
Inter Milan clearly think highly of Martinez and their manager – Simone Inzaghi – thinks he is a “very strong striker”.
“He’s a very important player for us and before Barcelona I said it was not a problem that he wasn’t scoring because he did what I asked of him since August,” the former Lazio coach claimed earlier this month .
“There are times when you have five shots and don’t score, but I wasn’t worried. He is a very strong striker who I want to continue to work with.”
