Juventus have made a decision about the future of Adrien Rabiot, but believe Premier League clubs – potentially including Manchester United and Chelsea – could have a say, according to a report.

Rabiot was a target for Manchester United all summer long, but the deal wasn’t right in the end. They turned their attention to Casemiro instead, which has proved to be sensible so far.

Indeed, it never seemed like Rabiot had all the attributes Manchester United would need. His form with Juventus hadn’t been strong enough over the past few seasons.

One concern was his lack of goalscoring output. He didn’t even find the net once in 2021-22, despite making 45 appearances in all competitions.

However, the Frenchman already has five goals from 14 appearances so far in 2022-23. He has already matched his most prolific campaign with Juventus; the former Paris Saint-Germain man needs just two more goals to break his personal record overall.

It goes to show how the perception of a player can change relatively quickly in football. Now, Manchester United might be looking at Rabiot as someone who could have made an impact for them.

Recently, Chelsea have also come into the equation as potential contenders for his signature. Interestingly, they plan to send loanee Denis Zakaria back to Juventus, but could take someone else from the Turin outfit.

Juventus, though, do not want to let go of Rabiot after seeing him return to form. After all, it has been a pretty forgettable season for them so far as a whole, so they need to retain anyone showing a glimmer of talent.

Contract talks to take place

The problem is that Rabiot’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the season. He could be free to speak to clubs in the Premier League from the beginning of January.

Negotiations with Rabiot have tended to be difficult for his employers throughout his career. But Juventus have now decided they want to enter discussions, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian website has reported that Juventus are ready to make a strong attempt to tie Rabiot down for longer, aware that this could be his best season yet with the club.

That said, the report indicates there are some fears that better offers could arrive from elsewhere – specifically the Premier League.

Now, Calciomercato does not name any of his suitors in their latest update. However, it wouldn’t be too surprising if it was the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea causing those fears.

Juventus stopping to think about Rabiot

Whether they can tempt Juventus into a January sale or not is another matter.

Writing for Caught Offside, Fabrizio Romano has denied that Rabiot could be sold in January. That said, there will be plenty of interest in him by the summer if Juventus haven’t been able to extend his contract.

Romano said: “There have been fresh transfer rumours about Adrien Rabiot. But I’m absolutely not sure that he will leave Juventus in January.

“He’s doing great and he’s key player for [Massimiliano] Allegri this season, so I see him staying at least until the end of the season – then his contract will be discussed as the current one expires in June 2023.

“Manchester United held talks over signing Rabiot in the summer, but there were no other clubs in the race. In the end, his salary demands meant United pulled out of the move.

“For now, it is quiet. But I’m sure he’ll have a lot of clubs interested if he does end up being a free agent in the summer.”

Rabiot must let his football do the talking over the next few months. In turn, he can decide what the best route is for him.

But by raising his standards on the pitch, he is doing his chances no harm of either securing a big move or a big next contract in Italy.
