Manchester United are on the verge of making former Lazio man Thomas Strakosha their new backup goalkeeper, according to a report.

After the departure of Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest, it has been important for Manchester United to find a new deputy to David De Gea. They still have Tom Heaton on the books, but are planning for him to remain third choice.

Hence, they will be looking for a new second in command. They have been linked with a few options, but the latest to emerge on their radar – per sources such as talkSPORT and 90min – is Strakosha.

The Albania international has just left Lazio as a free agent. He previously spent 10 years on the books of the Rome-based club, including six seasons with their senior team.

In total, Strakosha made 208 appearances in a Lazio shirt. Over the past couple of seasons, though, he has no longer been their undisputed number one. Therefore, he is now ready for a new challenge.

He was a target for Fulham, where he would likely have been a starter, but they are now focusing on Bernd Leno instead.

Instead, it appears he is going to choose Manchester United as his next club. talkSPORT reporter Geoff Peters has claimed the Red Devils are “closing in” on signing Strakosha.

His claims have been backed up by 90min, who state that “an agreement is all but in place” for United to take the 27-year-old. Before putting pen to paper, he will have to pass a medical.

But as things stand, it appears he is the player United have chosen to provide competition for Strakosha.

Although the last couple of years have not been too kind to Strakosha, a fresh start could be what he needs.

He built up plenty of experience during his Lazio career. For a time, he was one of Serie A’s more reliable goalkeepers.

Despite the question marks that have emerged since, a backup role at Man Utd may suit him. He has experience in the Europa League, in which the Red Devils will compete this season, so has a decent pedigree.

While he may have felt worthy of more opportunities in the last two years at Lazio, at a club like United – behind a keeper like De Gea – he would seemingly be more accepting of a supporting role.
