Man Utd in dreamland with shock Tottenham U-turn to spark Harry Kane transfer for eye-watering sum
A surprise Tottenham climbdown has put a blockbuster Harry Kane transfer within reach of Man Utd, and how the deal must be structured has been revealed.
The future of Harry Kane promises to be among the biggest transfer sagas of the summer. Tottenham are understood to be hell-bent on retaining their talisman who is poised to reach a crossroads in his career.
Spurs look destined to embark on another rebuild with Antonio Conte’s position becoming increasingly untenable.
The manager situation aside, Kane has made no secret of his desire to lift major honours and try as they might, Spurs keep falling short.
Kane’s current deal expires at the end of next season. As such, if Tottenham were to cash in, the upcoming window would be the ideal time.
However, Sky Sports recently reported Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, had ruled Kane would not be sold this summer – even if he refused to pen fresh terms.
That stance would ensure Spurs get one last season out of their lethal frontman, though would greatly increase the risk of losing a highly saleable asset for nothing 12 months later.
But per a remarkable new report from The Times, Tottenham’s true stance is not what Sky reported.
Tottenham U-turn sparks Man Utd hope
The Times state Spurs may well consider a Harry Kane sale, though only on one condition.
Tottenham would first require a suitor to bid the round sum of £100m. Kane and nine-figure valuations have long gone hand-in-hand, though there’s a catch.
To ultimately give the greenlight to a £100m move, Tottenham want the entirety of the £100m paid up front and in one colossal lump sum.
Clubs generally pay their transfer fees in instalments, or at the very least, offset a decent chunk of the total sum through future add-ons.
Spurs hope their £100m up front stance will deter Man Utd and any other suitors. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are both hovering over the player too.
However, if any of those clubs do believe Kane is worth paying £100m in one go for, Tottenham could reluctantly wave goodbye to their record goalscorer.
It’s reiterated Tottenham would prioritise selling to an overseas side. With good reason, it’ll be a bitter pill to swallow seeing Kane line up against Spurs at least twice a season in England.
Though if only Man Utd meet the new demand, Spurs may have no choice if Kane makes it clear he won’t sign an extension and Spurs decide to cash in while they still can.
While it’s an incredibly encouraging update for United whose main focus this summer is signing an elite centre-forward, it’s not yet a slam dunk.
That’s because the Times acknowledge Man Utd remain wary about engaging in a protracted transfer saga.
The Red Devils were burnt last summer with their multi-month chase of Frenkie de Jong not bearing fruit. Spurs are notoriously tough negotiators and won’t make life easy for Erik ten Hag and co.
Regardless, it does appear a deal is there for the making for Man Utd. The first step towards bringing Kane up to Manchester will be a gigantic £100m bid with no frills attached.
Alternative targets should Kane remain in north London include Victor Osimhen, Goncalo Ramos, Dusan Vlahovic and Mohammed Kudus.
