Man Utd are in talks with Feyenoord over the hijacking of Lyon’s deal to sign Tyrell Malacia, and a Frenkie de Jong connection could aid their cause, per a source.

Malacia, 22, had emerged as a Manchester United transfer target over the past week. The left-back is a regular at Feyenoord and his performances at club level were rewarded with five Netherlands caps since making his debut in 2021.

However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed a switch to Lyon was on the cards.

Indeed, Romano previously reported the defender was bound for Ligue 1 in a deal worth approximately £13m.

However, news on the move over subsequent days went quiet before reports from the Netherlands began to suggest all was not well.

De Telegraaf claimed Lyon were struggling to muster the full fee up front, which was a key Feyenoord demand.

According to Romano in a fresh update, Lyon’s inability to conclude a deal has opened the door for United to strike.

The journalist tweeted United are ‘trying to hijack’ Malacia’s move and talks with Feyenoord are currently underway.

A ‘full, verbal agreement’, had been reached with Lyon, but United have ‘jumped in before it was signed’.

Potentially aiding United’s cause is the fact Malacia shares the same agent as fellow transfer target, Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils are finally closing in on a move for the Dutch midfielder. It stands to reason their chances of snagging Malacia will be helped given dialogue is already open and flowing with the agent.

Feyenoord chief talks up agreement

Feyenoord director Frank Arnesen later confirmed the developments.

Via a second Romano tweet, Arnesen stated: “The agreement with Man United is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell.

“If Malacia says yes, then a transfer to Manchester United is imminent.”

Factors aiding Tyrell Malacia steal

Another factor in United’s favour are the sums involved. Lyon were unable to muster £13m up front.

A fee in that range will not be a problem for Erik ten Hag’s side. Indeed, Romano confirmed United have tabled an offer of that size with the fee guaranteed.

The lure of working with such a distinguished Dutch manager may also appeal to Netherlands international, Malacia.

He operates solely at left-back, meaning he’d provide stiff competition for Luke Shaw if signed.

His arrival would also heighten speculation over the future of current back-up, Alex Telles.
