Manchester United have twice held talks over a move for David Carmo as a back-up centre-back option to Jurrien Timber, according to a report.

New Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has made adding to his defence a key transfer priority this summer. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have been on the fringes of the team and their futures are subsequently unclear.

As for who Ten Hag could sign, a host of names have cropped up on his radar.

Ajax’s Netherlands international Timber has become the top target. Former Ajax boss Ten Hag promoted his fellow countryman to the first team there and is a big fan of the 20-year-old.

However, the Manchester Evening News has claimed that Portugal international Carmo is also on United’s radar.

The 22-year-old has, like Timber at Ajax, has risen through Braga’s youth ranks to become vital for the Portuguese side.

Man Utd have subsequently spoken to the player’s representatives twice, but have yet to make any firm offer.

Indeed, Carmo is for now a back-up option for Timber, who is United and Ten Hag’s top target.

Carmo could have moved to the Premier League last January, when Liverpool were in for him. However, their €4million (£3.4million) loan move for him amid their defensive injury nightmare fell through.

Braga president Antonio Salvador admitted that Carmo had a “foot and a half” at Liverpool. The Anfield club included a £16million option to buy the player after his prospective loan move.

TEAMtalk reported in April that Atletico Madrid have transfer interest in Carmo as they look to beef up their defence.

The Portuguese star, who earned his first call-up to his country’s senior squad this week, has played 56 times for Braga.

It remains unclear how Ten Hag plans to line-up his team at the back amid the options at his disposal.

Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are the most senior pairing as it stands, with Victor Lindelof another key figure.

Jones has one year left on his deal but is only just back in the team after injury issues. Bailly has until 2024 on his contract, but it remains unclear if he will renew.

While Timber is Ten Hag’s top target, United would have to be wary over Carmo’s fitness if he joined.

The defender returned in February after almost a year out due to an ankle injury.

Carmo subsequently featured in the Portuguese top flight and Europa League, but the Red Devils would also have to be sure that he could adapt to a step up to the Premier League.
