Despite being on the verge of signing Kim Min-jae from Napoli, Man Utd have already been looking at someone who could be the next addition to their defence, according to reports.

Man Utd are in pole position to sign Kim this summer after he won Serie A in his first season at Napoli. They will be able to activate his release clause in order to bring him to the Premier League for the first time.

Reports on Saturday have indicated that it is virtually a certainty that Kim will become a Man Utd player this summer. In turn, he could take over from Raphael Varane as the main partner to Lisandro Martinez.

Kim’s arrival could spell serious trouble for Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof in terms of having a future at Old Trafford. And the fact that the club might be eyeing another defensive reinforcement would only add to that.

According to O Jogo, Man Utd scouts took their latest in a long line of trips to watch Goncalo Inacio in action for Sporting CP against Vizela on Friday.

He was even among the scorers in a 2-1 win, but it will have been his defensive contributions that were under observation by Man Utd’s representatives.

Inacio has also been heavily linked with Liverpool, but is believed to have a preference of joining Man Utd instead. In turn, the observers Erik ten Hag sent were the most prominent for the match in Vizela.

Man Utd might struggle to afford Kim and Inacio at once

Although no asking price is named in the report, Man Utd would likely have to spend big in order to sign Inacio, who is under contract in Lisbon until 2026. Whether they can afford to do so this summer after the potential purchase of Kim is questionable, given that they are aiming to invest in a centre-forward at the other end of the pitch as well.

After adding Varane in 2021, Martinez in 2022 and probably Kim in 2023, perhaps Inacio might be one to watch for 2024.

But given the amount of interest in his services, Man Utd might need to act faster than expected to avoid seeing him end up at a rival.

Inacio, still only 21 years old, has outlined his potential across 122 appearances in his Sporting career since coming through their youth ranks. This season, he has been busy with 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals along the way.

He has earned Champions League and Europa League experience, making him an exciting talent for his next takers to work with. Man Utd are hoping it might just be them.
