Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has until the end of the week to decide his future or Man Utd will move on to other targets, according to reports.

The Netherlands international has been the subject of intense speculation for the last couple of months with the Red Devils locked in negotiations as they try to find an agreement.

A deal had reportedly been agreed between the two clubs earlier in the week with Man Utd happy to pay €85m (£72m) for the midfielder.

Is Anthony Martial more suited to Manchester United than Ronaldo?

It was understood to be above their original value of €60m but they have knocked €15m off Barcelona’s €100m asking price as the clubs met in the middle.

But it all seems slightly irrelevant after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano brought news today that a deal was “now stalling” with his agents informing Barcelona and Man Utd that De Jong still has “no intention” of leaving the Camp Nou.

And now Spanish publication Sport insist that Man Utd have issued an ‘ultimatum’ to De Jong in which they demand an answer from him before the end of the week.

If he doesn’t give an indication that he wants to move to Old Trafford before that deadline then they will end their interest and move on to other targets.

The main issue is thought to be salary with Barcelona still owing him around £17m in deferred wages and bonuses from during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, while it is understood that United’s wage offer will not cover his lost earnings.

Sport adds: ‘All parties are confident of reaching an agreement, although the reality is that the negotiation is very tense at the moment. If De Jong does not end up leaving, it is difficult for Barça to opt to sign a new midfielder and even a centre-back.’

Speaking yesterday, former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor called on the Red Devils to issue an ultimatum and now he seems to have his wish.

“It’s going to come to the stage where Man United need to have some self-respect,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“A club of Man United’s stature, how have they fallen where De Jong has said ‘Let me keep you on hold and make my mind up in a couple of months’.

“That isn’t how Man United are used to being treated, usually it’s ‘I’ll sign for Man United, let’s get it done’.

“It’s a bit embarrassing for them the longer it goes on, to be honest. Maybe they’ve got to give him an ultimatum and say ‘There is this date. You either sign or we are moving on to other players’.”
