Man Utd: Journalist quashes report of Cristiano Ronaldo transfer meeting – ‘Not true’
It is “not true” that agent Jorge Mendes met with Bayern Munich to discuss a transfer for Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal captain recently gave an astonishingly explosive interview in which he heavily criticised his current team and manager.
Admitting that he doesn’t “respect” Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag and that he didn’t know who former interim manager Ralf Rangnick was, he has burned all bridges with the club.
There are plenty of rumours circulating about where Ronaldo will end up with his Man Utd career sure to end when the transfer window opens in January.
Ronaldo had reportedly pushed for a transfer in the summer, though he told The Sun that it was the club trying to get him out.
He was linked with Bayern Munich, Napoli, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.
A move failed to come to fruition, however, and Ronaldo stayed at Old Trafford.
It has been a very difficult season for the Portuguese legend so far.
In 16 matches across all competitions, the 37-year-old has only scored three goals.
Ahead of the winter window, Fabrizio Romano discussed potential destinations for Ronaldo.
The transfer journalist insists Ronaldo did not go into this interview knowing he had a move lined up.
He also said that a move to Chelsea in the summer failed to materialise because then-head coach Thomas Tuchel was not interested despite co-owner Todd Boehly wanting to sign the Portugal striker.
“Todd Boehly was tempted by Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. It was Thomas Tuchel who said no,” Romano explained.
“Now, it is up to them because they have a project with different ideas, they are speaking to Endrick, they are speaking to Christopher Nkunku and the negotiation is more than advanced.
“If you bring in Cristiano Ronaldo, how long could be the contract? I don’t see a contract of six months for Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Romano also said a move to Bayern or Napoli in January was unlikely.
Despite this, a report emerged shortly after Romano’s words that Bayern had held talks with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, earlier this month before the interview was released.
However, BILD journalist Christian Falk has said this is not the case.
Writing on his Twitter page, Falk said: “It is NOT TRUE that there was a meeting between Bayern and Jorge Mendes.
“@FCBayern is not interested in Ronaldo.”
A move to Bayern would be the best-case scenario for Ronaldo, really.
The Portugal captain was eager to find a club playing in the Champions League and the German team have a great chance of winning that competition.
Ronaldo is obviously eager to remain the all-time leading scorer in Europe’s elite competition.
He currently has 140 goals in 183 matches, 11 clear of Lionel Messi in second place.
Despite his terrific record and top spot in the rankings, Ronaldo does not have the best goal-to-game ratio.
The five-time winner of the competition averages 0.77 goals per game, level with Ruud van Nistelrooy and worse off than Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.
