A Dutch reporter has provided an update on the future of Jurrien Timber, who is a top target for Manchester United this summer.

Since the appointment of Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have been linked with plenty of Ajax stars, past and present. They include Timber, Frenkie de Jong and Antony.

Central midfielder De Jong could be the first to reunite with Ten Hag at Old Trafford. Manchester United have made a bid for the Barcelona man, although that was unsuccessful.

They are likely to return with a better offer as Ten Hag is pushing them to complete the signing.

A new midfielder is important following the exits of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic – all on free transfers.

But that isn’t the only position that an Ajax academy graduate could help to strengthen this summer.

The Red Devils are keen to land Timber from the Eredivisie champions to improve their centre-back options.

And former Tottenham player Rafael van der Vaart has sung the praises of the 21-year-old, which will make United even more eager to sign him.

Jurrien Timber receives praise from Dutch hero

“Timber is so quick, light feet, always sharp, never panicking on the ball,” Van Der Vaart said.

“[He is] almost like a great midfielder in defence.”

Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, who works for De Telegraaf, has given an update on Timber and the United rumours, as cited by Metro.

The reporter claims Timber will go on holiday this week, where he will make a final decision on his future.

Despite previously being attracted to a United switch, Timber is now ‘leaning heavily’ towards an Ajax stay.

One of the main reasons behind this is the Qatar World Cup, which starts in November. Timber wants to continue getting regular game time so he can add to his eight Netherlands caps at the tournament.

Ten Hag would certainly give him opportunities, given their good relationship. But clearly the player feels he is more likely to get in the Holland squad if he remains with Ajax.

Verweij says it is too much of a risk for Timber to move at this point, as it may hamper his national team chances and development.

Timber is certainly making great strides in Amsterdam. Last season, he made 43 appearances across all competitions. He put in some top displays as Ajax won the league title and reached the Dutch cup final.

Moving to United would increase Timber’s profile. And should he become a regular in Manchester then Louis van Gaal would have to include him in the World Cup squad.

However, this is not a certainty as Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are already available to Ten Hag. Like so many other players, Timber could prioritise his World Cup chances over a transfer this summer.

That doesn’t mean Timber’s move to United is completely off the cards. If they receive a rejection this year, then it would make sense for United to go back in for him next summer.

Meanwhile, Andreas Pereira has an opportunity to leave United permanently once his Flamengo loan spell ends.
