Frenkie de Jong joining Manchester United was a huge topic of transfer news over the summer – and now a source has rated the chances of it being brought back to life in January.
Erik ten Hag previously worked with De Jong at Ajax and wanted to reunite with his compatriot after taking the Manchester United job in the summer. Ultimately, though, Barcelona kept hold of the midfielder, even though they would not have minded cashing in.
The midfielder’s stance was important, as he did not seem too keen on joining Manchester United. Links with the likes of Chelsea also fell away in the end.
However, De Jong has remained in the news since his decision to stay at Barcelona. The prospect of transfer links resurfacing in January has existed.
De Jong still has a significant list of suitors, such as Manchester United, Chelsea and now potentially Liverpool. Towards the start of the season, there was a feeling he was falling down the pecking order at Barcelona.
Yet De Jong has regained an important place in Xavi’s midfield hierarchy recently. Indeed, there have been four La Liga starts for him in October alone.
With that in mind, Diario Sport is now reporting that De Jong has already made up his mind about what the January transfer window might bring.
According to the Spanish outlet, De Jong has decided against leaving Barcelona if anyone comes calling in the winter. In fact, he is described as being “oblivious” to suggestions of him moving on.
Until recently, his idea was to wait until the World Cup before listening to any other clubs. Now, he has ruled out the prospect of hearing from his suitors in January as well.
The report from Diario Sport says he is “clear and firm” in his stance on his Barcelona future.
Therefore, the soonest the situation could change would be next summer. By then, Barcelona might consider “astronomical” offers to take him away.
His contract in Catalonia is due to run until 2026, though, which will give his current employers a strong negotiating stance. That said, they will still need to consider selling players to balance the books. Therefore, they will be aware of any developments involving De Jong.
Frenkie de Jong should always attract interest
Still only 25 years old, it is likely that Frenkie de Jong will remain in gossip columns for a long time yet.
A player of his pedigree will be linked with other elite clubs, despite him already being at one.
At this stage, it again looks unlikely that De Jong will actually be on the move. But as long as Barcelona need to raise funds and as long as he performs well, it is unsurprising to see him connected with the likes of Manchester United.
If the Red Devils still want to strengthen in midfield – having already added Casemiro from Real Madrid in the summer instead – perhaps they will have to broaden their horizons for the time being.
But De Jong is someone who could always be in the backs of their minds. The same may be true however long Ten Hag lasts at the club.
