Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand admits he can no longer “defend” Cristiano Ronaldo after his latest interview criticising the Red Devils.
The 37-year-old has claimed it was Erik ten Hag and the Man Utd board who were trying to get him out the club in the summer, despite rumours that Ronaldo was attempting to leave after the Red Devils missed out on the Champions League.
Ronaldo criticised Ten Hag, former interim boss Ralf Rangnick, Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville and more in his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
Rooney recently commented that recent behaviour from the Portugal international was “unacceptable” with Ronaldo taking offence to those comments from his former Man Utd team-mate.
Ronaldo appeared to have a dig at Rooney’s appearance during the interview while he said that Rooney and Neville are “not my friends”.
And Man Utd legend Ferdinand thinks Ronaldo should’ve spoken to Rooney behind closed doors rather than airing his dirty laundry in public.
Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel: “Wazza’s come out and said a few things about Ronaldo which is well within his right. But Cristiano’s taken offence to it and mentioned him in the interview.
“As mates you want to see that done behind closed doors, you know what I mean? It is what it is now between them two and I don’t think they’ll be sending each other any Christmas cards.”
Ferdinand has been one of Ronaldo’s biggest cheerleaders, even when others have criticised, but the former Man Utd centre-back says he can no longer “defend” his friend.
On the Ronaldo interview as a whole, Ferdinand added: “You can’t sit here and defend that from Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Deep down, I know for a fact, this has all been manufactured for one thing, and that’s for him to leave the club. This love affair between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United is now over.
“I don’t think there’s any way back. I don’t think the club will take him back and I don’t think he wants to come back, I think that’s the given.
“He wants to get out of this place. Up until this interview I could defend him and thought the club should have communicated with him better.
“But in a way Erik ten Hag has got what he wants and Cristiano Ronaldo will get what he wants. In this situation he’s done everything he can to get out of this club.
“I played with some players who did far less than this and never wore the shirt again.”
