Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has revealed the harsh treatment Paul Scholes dished out to Paul Pogba when the Frenchman arrived at the club at just 17.
The midfielder was brought back to Old Trafford this summer for a world record £89m after four years in Italy with Juventus.
The France international may have only been a teenager upon his initial arrival but that didn't stop Scholes giving him a rude awakening to test the patience of the youngster and give him more of a desire to win.
Vidic told ESPN FC: “Paul was only 17 and already as physically strong as he is now, with a very good physique.
“Paul Scholes would kick him and test him, just as he did when I arrived.
“Scholes was showing the will to win, showing that we were not friends kicking the ball about, but that we trained tough and strong as if we were in matches.
“It was: ‘You kick me and I kick you.’
“We fought every day and didn't need to switch on for a game because we were always switched on.
“United had a lot of players like that, who were so competitive.
“That meant we were better prepared, even more than some of the best teams, who had great players but not the same drive to win.”
Pogba has come under criticism this season for his lacklustre performances with Jose Mourinho struggling to find a suitable role for the towering midfielder.
The Frenchman has the character to bounce back to the top and if he can remember some of the lessons handed out to him by Scholes, he may be even more inspired.
