Man Utd midfielder aiming to avoid summer exit as source reveals he ‘feels at home’ at Old Trafford
The stance of one midfielder who could be due to leave Manchester United at the end of the season has been uncovered in a report.
During the summer, Man Utd added to their midfield with the signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Both of them have had a positive impact on the team in general. In the hierarchy, they have been above the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek.
Now, McTominay in particular is facing an uncertain future. He may have to leave the club whose academy he came through.
Likewise, the currently injured Van de Beek has not had too many chances to prove himself since reuniting with Erik ten Hag.
Van de Beek is not the only Man Utd midfielder currently on the sidelines. Indeed, Eriksen suffered an injury during January, which prompted Man Utd to make another addition to their midfield.
Marcel Sabitzer arrived on loan from Bayern Munich for the rest of the season to account for Eriksen’s absence. Ten Hag has shown faith in the new recruit since, across seven appearances so far.
There have already been some indications that Sabitzer could convert his move to Man Utd into a permanent one after his loan spell concludes.
Now, Sport Bild has provided the latest on his future, confirming that the Austria international “feels at home” with Man Utd. In fact, he “feels the appreciation there that he sometimes lacked in Munich.”
Therefore, it might be mutually beneficial for them to keep him in a transfer that might be worth €20million (£17.8m).
The report from Sport Bild was exploring players who could leave Bayern in the summer. It seems Sabitzer – whose contract with his parent club is due to last until 2025 – is one of the prime candidates, especially after already getting one foot out of the door.
Marcel Sabitzer might be likeliest Man Utd loanee to stay
Turning 29 later this month, Sabitzer could commit the rest of his prime years to Man Utd if he makes a permanent transfer there.
Although yet to register a goal or assist for them, the Austria international is gaining regular starts. It remains to be seen how he might fit in alongside a healthy Eriksen.
But he could certainly be a useful option to keep around if he can rediscover the more impactful form he showed before with RB Leipzig.
Sabitzer will simply have to use the months ahead to his advantage in terms of proving that he can be up to the standard required by Man Utd (or at least that he is more useful than McTominay or Van de Beek).
But out of the three players they brought in on loan in January – the others being Wout Weghorst and Jack Butland – perhaps he could have the biggest chance of staying into next season.
In other Man Utd news, Ten Hag is reportedly eyeing a £48m signing that will make him unpopular…
