Man Utd nearing blockbuster first signing as Ten Hag accelerates move for Prem ace who’s already said yes
Man Utd are stepping up their move for a proven Premier League performer who’s already agreed personal terms, though a trusted source has detailed a potential hitch.
Additions at Man Utd this summer are expected to come at goalkeeper, centre-back, central midfield and striker. In other words, Erik ten Hag hopes to revamp the entire spine of his team.
A quality back-up to David de Gea – assuming the Spaniard signs a new contract – is wanted.
At centre-half, Napoli’s Kim Min-jae is United’s preferred target, while Axel Disasi of Monaco has emerged as a credible plan B. According to L’Equipe, 25-year-old Disasi is ‘very tempted’ by the thought of moving to England.
The striker search remains open with primary targets Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen extremely difficult to sign. Alternative options include Randal Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos and Rasmus Hojlund.
However, United’s first summer signing may actually come in central midfield. Indeed, Chelsea’s Mason Mount, 24, has already said yes to joining Man Utd by agreeing personal terms.
That was according to the Telegraph last week, and per Fabrizio Romano, Man Utd are preparing to accelerate the move.
The transfer guru tweeted Man Utd are “preparing their opening bid for Mason Mount”. However, a quick agreement over the transfer fee doesn’t appear likely.
Man Utd want to negotiate lower price
Indeed, the Evening Standard claimed Chelsea value their two-time Player of the Year at £70m. By contrast, Man Utd believe Mount is only worth a fee between £50m-£60m.
Romano stated the “main issue” affecting the deal’s progress will be the valuation gap between the two sides.
Nonetheless, United reportedly “remain calm” and the signs suggest they need not worry.
Indeed, Mount has already agreed personal terms with the club, meaning there’ll not be an issue on the player’s end.
Elsewhere, Liverpool had courted Mount too, but have since turned their attention to Alexis Mac Allister and five other midfielders after greenlighting yet another midfield exit. Mac Allister’s move to Anfield was officially confirmed on Thursday morning.
Liverpool are out of the picture for Mount, as fellow suitor Arsenal may be too. Indeed, the Gunners are prioritising moves for Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.
What’s more, Chelsea are in a weak bargaining position with regards to Mount who only has one year left on his deal.
The Blues must sell well this summer to help conform to Financial Fair Play and Mount is arguably the player they’ll receive the biggest fee for.
As such, and while there’s a difference of opinion between Chelsea and Man Utd at present, it does appear Mount will end up moving to Old Trafford when the final chapter is written.
