Manchester United are set to pay the €40m release clause of Porto star Vitinha, with his transfer said to be ‘imminent’, according to reports from Portugal.

The 22-year-old midfielder came through the Porto youth system and was loaned to Wolves for the 2020-21 season.

He made 23 appearances under Nuno Espirito Santo in that time, but many of them were brief and they decided not to take up their €20m option to make the move permanent.

Vitinha was a standout performer for Porto on his return to the Estadio do Dragao last season, making 47 appearances in all competitions, with four goals and five assists perating primarily as a central midfielder.

And Sport Witness have compiled reports from Portugal which suggest he’s about to move to Old Trafford.

Record claim his exit is ‘imminent’ and his €40m buyout clause ‘will be exercised’ by a Premier League club, with United the only one named.

Meanwhile, O Jogo claim Jorge Mendes met with Manchester United and Barcelona last week, when Vitinha’s future was dicussed.

O Bola confirm Porto are open to his sale as they need to balance their books and state that the side interested are a member of the Premier League’s Big Six, with United once again the only club named.

None of the three reports explicitly state United as the interested party, but the hints are more than hints.

Ten Hag is definitely keen to strenthen his midfield, with Frenkie de Jong thought to be close to a move and Ruben Neves also linked.

Wolves’ move for Joao Palhinha – a player United were also interested in – is said to have ‘triggered’ the Red Devils to bid for Neves as new manager Erik ten Hag starts a rebuild at Old Trafford.

That’s according to 90min reporter Rob Blanchette, who tweeted: ‘#MUFC will take advantage of Joao Palhinha’s expected arrival at Wolves to trigger their offer for Ruben Neves.

‘United have scouted Palhinha but won’t compete for the player’s signature if Wolves agree a price for their Portuguese midfielder.’
