It’s been claimed that Wout Weghorst has been “harshly” criticised this season despite his “painful” record since joining Man Utd in January.

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Weghorst secured himself a loan move to Man Utd during the January transfer window.

After previously failing in the Premier League with Burnley, the Netherlands international was recruited as a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The forward produced a couple of promising performances in a United shirt but he slipped down the pecking order during the run-in as Erik ten Hag preferred to use Anthony Martial when the Frenchman was fit enough to feature.

Man Utd will not be making Weghorst’s loan move from Burnley permanent so his future is in doubt heading into this summer’s window.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Everton are ‘interested’ in signing the Dutchman, who is unlikely to have a future at Burnley ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Former Ajax and AZ Alkmaar winger Kenneth Perez thinks critics have been “pretty harsh” on Weghorst even though his goalless record in the Premier League for United is “very painful”.

“I find them rather harsh in England,” Perez told Voetbalpraat.

“We get the reputation that we are a bit harsh. I have also been outspoken about Weghorst, but they say that he may have chosen the wrong sport.

“That’s pretty harsh. The sport of football is of course not only Manchester United, also AZ, Besiktas… He did a great job there.

“It is of course very painful for him that he has scored zero goals (in the league). And we’ve talked about it before, but of course, he doesn’t look good in a Manchester United shirt, (with) his limited technique and all his other limitations.”

Earlier this year, Paul Merson hit out at Ten Hag for using Weghorst as a makeshift number ten for Man Utd.

“The manager, for me, has been getting away with it. Yes, he’s done great in a way. But Wout Weghorst as a No 10, I’m not having that. How is he a No 10? How is the manager getting away with that?” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It’s Manchester United Football Club and you’ve got Weghorst as a 10 – he can’t turn and run, he can’t pass through the eye of a needle. What is the thinking? I’m not blaming Ten Hag because they lost, but why play Marcus Rashford against Virgil van Dijk? He plays out wide every week.”
