Man Utd are prepared to go above and beyond financially to secure a Frenkie de Jong deal, and a Barcelona U-turn has hinted at the transfer saga’s outcome.

Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United is unquestionably the No 1 transfer saga of the summer. Deals for Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez were short, sharp affairs. The future of Leeds ace Raphinha had legs, though not on the same scale as the speculation and rumour surrounding Man Utd target De Jong.

The classy Dutchman, 25, has been identified as the perfect candidate to run Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

The central areas have frequently come in for criticism over the last few years, and an arrival of a player of De Jong’s calibre would be a real statement of intent.

United have made breakthroughs in certain aspects of the deal, most notably agreeing a transfer fee with Barcelona.

A deal worth an initial £63m is in place and Barca are desperate to push De Jong out of the door.

The cash from his potential sale will go towards other deals including Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. However, the noises coming from De Jong and his camp are unwavering: the player does not want to leave Barcelona.

That led to speculation Barca could leave De Jong off their pre-season tour of America. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barca have backed down from making that powerplay and De Jong is among the travelling party to the States.

The trusted journalist again reaffirmed De Jong is dead set on remaining at the Camp Nou. And with Barcelona taking De Jong to America, it could be a sign they are finally willing to accept De Jong will stay.

Man Utd open the chequebook for Frenkie de Jong

It’s been suggested the issue of €17m in deferred wages owed to De Jong is a factor emboldening his stance. However, according to Spanish outlet Sport, Man Utd are ready to take that problem off the table.

They state Manchester United are prepared to open the chequebook and cover the entirety of the wages owed to De Jong.

Furthermore, they state United are also ready to offer an even higher salary than the whopping £395,000-a-week that had been speculated.

That would not only eclipse what De Jong currently earns in Spain, but would bring him within touching distance of Cristiano Ronaldo’s wages.

Whether United’s new approach will be enough to change De Jong’s mind, only time will tell. But at least from a United perspective, it appears they’re unwilling to accept defeat without a major fight.

Will he be signing No 4?

After a slow start, Ten Hag’s first window in charge is finally taking shape.

Tyrell Malacia arrived from Feyenoord and has already featured in pre-season. Christian Eriksen’s arrival was confirmed on Friday with Ten Hag cited as a major factor why the Dane chose the Red Devils.

Lisandro Martinez could see his move from Ajax confirmed later today (Saturday). A £46m fee will make its way to Amsterdam, though Rio Ferdinand does have two concerns.

However, the biggest prize would undoubtedly be De Jong. But given the twists and turns we’ve seen so far, few would be surprised to see the saga drag on into August.

However, with the Qatar World Cup prompting an early start to the new campaign (August 5), the pressure is on United to get De Jong signed as quickly as they can.
