Man Utd are ready to make an offer for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as they compete with Arsenal for his signature, according to reports.

Martinez joined Ajax from Defensa y Justicia in 2019 and has impressed during his 120 appearances for the Dutch club, winning two Eredivisie titles and a Dutch Cup.

The former Newell’s Old Boys defender has seven caps for Argentina and plays primarily as a centre-back, although he is also adept at left-back and central midfield.

Brentford? Spurs? Manchester United? Where next for Christian Eriksen?

Martinez has impressed enough during his 39 appearances in all competitions this season to attract interest from a number of top clubs around Europe.

Premier League sides Man Utd and Arsenal have both taken a particular interest in the Argentinian and now they face a battle to sign him this summer.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claims that the Gunners have told Ajax that they are willing to pay €30m for Martinez after asking if he is available for sale.

It is understood that Arsenal backed off after they were informed he would be staying at the Eredivisie champions – but now Man Utd are ‘preparing an offer for the player’.

De Telegraaf adds that the Red Devils are planning to ‘dig much deeper’ than Arsenal with Man Utd needing to make an offer that Ajax can’t refuse.

Meanwhile, Teddy Sheringham is worried about United’s recruitment this summer and reckons the Red Devils “could have a season of absolute chaos again”.

“There is a massive recruitment job at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag needs to get players in with the right character and who understand the challenges of playing in the Premier League,” Sheringham told Lord Ping.

“Where is he going to find these players? I’m seeing the rumours about Frenkie de Jong. He hasn’t played in the Premier League and has been playing for Barcelona, who are expected to pretty much beat nearly every other team.

“Many of Barca’s domestic opponents roll over for them throughout the season. That doesn’t happen in the Premier League – every game is a battle.

“The pace and quality of the league could be a shock to the system for Ten Hag. And for a player like de Jong. United could have a season of absolute chaos again next year.”
